Blake Lewis: 'Paul McDonald Was Spot-On, Lauren Alaina Reminds Me of Jordin Sparks'
"You must be...the most beautiful girl in the world," I'm singing to J.Lo from my couch. 'American Idol' started out praising J.Lo's new 'People' magazine cover for 'Most Beautiful Woman in the World.' I must say...yes, she is one of the best.
Now to business. Last night, the contestants chose songs from our favorite movies. Paul McDonald was spot on with his version of "Old Time Rock and Roll" by Bob Seger. I really enjoyed this song choice for him. Before the performance William and Jimmy got into it a bit over Jimmy's boombox comment. Glad Will called him out on it. My favorite part was the sexy Saxophone girl killing it. What happened to the saxophone in pop music? I think they left it in the '80s. It was fun.
Lauren is starting to become one of my favorites. It might have to do with the fact that she reminds me so much of Jordin Sparks. Her song choices are always great and she really did a great job tonight. I can tell she is stepping it up and with just her and Haley left, rocking it out for the girls. She really needs to keep going like this.
Stefano sang Boyz II Men's "End Of The Road." I wasn't completely feeling it at the beginning, but when the arrangement started to pick up in the middle, I was sold. He killed it. The ending was great and his vocals were fantastic. I really hope he gets out of the bottom three.
Scotty McCreery just can't go wrong on this show. His voice isn't the kind I listen to, but when he sings, it's so genuine that you begin to really enjoy it. He stuck to country, singing George Straits – 'Cross my Heart' and it was perfection.
Casey Abrams sang and played the upright bass to 'Nature Boy' by Nate King Cole – one of my all time favorite jazz pieces. Finally great jazz on 'American Idol'!!! I'm an out of the box character, so naturally I relate to this guy the most. He told Jimmy what was up and I'm so glad he stuck to his guns. I think it will pay off in a big way. He really seems to be enjoying the ride by being himself and staying true to form. More upright bass every week, please!
When this show started, I wasn't a huge fan of Haley, but every week since the top twelve she hasn't done anything wrong. Her vocals are always great and I can see that she really wants it. Last night, she sang, 'Call Me' by Blondie. It started out sounding a little karaoke. I agreed with Randy completely on this one. By the end she brought it home and it was a good performance.
What was up with Jacob Lusk tonight? In all the shots of him, he looked like he didn't want to be there. Was he sick? Or was it the fact that Jimmy told him to sing something he really didn't want to sing, but just gave Jimmy what he wanted? He ended up singing 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' and it sounded great, as usual, but I wasn't sold. There was something missing from Jacob this week, but I can't pin point it. Still, he is always an amazing singer. I feel like I'm at church every Wednesday night when he is on stage.
Last but not least, James Durbin slayed the audience with some Sammy Hagar. Accompanying him was Zakk Wylde on the fiddle. It was the best closer of the show, this year. METAL!!!! This was his best performance and the fact that he stuck it to Jimmy Iovine and Will.I.Am. was priceless. He really knows himself, musically and vocally, and I think this will pay off.
James and Casey got my votes. Who got your vote?
