'Glee' Cast to Cover Rebecca Black's 'Friday'

by Chris Harnick, posted Apr 14th 2011 10:00AM
GleeThe cast of 'Glee' will be having "fun, fun, fun, fun" pretty soon. Confused? Well, it was bound to happen: The cast of 'Glee' will reportedly cover Rebecca Black's YouTube sensation 'Friday.'

According to Vulture, the song will get the 'Glee' treatment from cast members Kevin McHale, Chord Overstreet and Mark Salling.

This isn't the first time 'Glee' has covered an uber-popular song. They have previously performed Cee Lo Green's 'Forget You,' a number of Lady Gaga's hits, and later this season 'Born This Way' guest star Gwyneth Paltrow will sing Adele's 'Turning Tables.'

The one difference? Those songs are by actual recording artists; 'Friday' is by a 13-year-old girl.

Black's 'Friday' video has been watched more than 100 million times. The subject of countless parody videos and national media attention, the song catapulted 13-year-old Black into a new stratosphere of Internet celebrity.

Is 'Glee' too late in jumping on the 'Friday' bandwagon? Should it be jumping on the 'Friday' train at all? Viral videos have a shelf-life of a week or two before they become stale, so it seems strange that a TV show with a long lead time would take such a risk.

So, what's jumping the shark here: 'Glee' or 'Friday'?

My theory on their decision to cover "Friday" is this: Rebecca Black received a lot of cyber-bullying due to this song. Some may like her song, but a vast majority of people only watch the video to laugh at her and write mean comments about it. I think Glee may be covering it to support Rebecca and continue on with their anti-bullying stance.

Jimmy Fallon and Steven Corbert did a fine job on "Friday" on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon a few weeks back. Glee is so yesterday when it comes to Friday.

Gwyneth singing an Adele song ? You'd better be prepared to knock that ball so far out of the park that it becomes a satelite. Why is Gwen singing this song, I mean really? Did the producers actually ever consider having Adele herself sing the song? Did they ever even consider what that would have done for their ratings and good faith towards up and coming artists worth the effort. Did they ever consider how much father that would porogress their standings in La La Land regarding future talent and their ability to showcase it? You couldn't work Adele into the cast in order to give her the oppourtunity to showcase her own talent and musical magnificence? Lunch lady, female janitorial engineer, psycho school nurse(no, not the Terry-ex Mrs. Schuster type), girls phys-ed teacher, rival guidance counselor etc... ADELE DaHrl-liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing, you need to equate your face with the music( even though you've graced the cover of Rolling Stone). You are much too lovely and strong a person to step aside like this. You (are) have got to be the most talented female artist to be witnessed in a long long time...You are solidly and secure, pure talent in and of itself and you evolve constantly everytime you open your mouth and sing. You are quite simply a herald and should be recognized accordingly. Please don't sell yourself short...we as loyal followers think more highly of you and your talent. Kudos to Glee for recognizing the spectacular talent of Adele but shame on you also for not presenting it in it's true form...a prospect that you may want to look more closely in the future. Stop and think of the possibilities of presenting the future to people, not just the present a la` Kate Perry. Hmmmmmm, give it some thought...

"Glee" is hot with a Golden Globe win, two Image Award Nominations, two Grammy Nominations, they have a
DVD out as well as a Warblers album out. Also, us "Gleeks" shouldn't forget how the "Glee" cast aka
"New Directions" won their "Glee Club" competition with original songs. They deserve to have a little
escape from winning and have a little bit of fun. Let's get real, people!!
Also, if you don't like the fact that Kevin, Mark or especially Chord are singing this fun song, you don't have to watch. Later.

I think gmpnm must be delusional...in no universe is Friday actually a good song. It's such a joke and the only reason people watch it is to get a laugh. I think if Glee can do a good job with it then they can do just about anything.
