'Happy Endings' Premieres with Wedding Walkout and Birthday Disaster (VIDEO)

There have been so many bad 'Friends' clones over the years, you might be inclined to just dismiss any new ones that come along. 'Happy Endings' (Wed., 9:30PM ET on ABC) had a strong creative start, though, and may just buck that trend. The premiere introduced us to our cast of characters, and did a great job of giving us reasons to care about all six of them. That's not easy to do in a pilot, and even harder when there's some pretty heavy storytelling going on. While things kicked off with Alex walking out on Dave at their wedding, it culminated in a birthday party celebration for Penny who was turning 30, but lying about her age to impress her new boyfriend.
Penny's not the only liar, though. According to Max, her boyfriend Dave is hiding something pretty big as well.
"That dude is gay," he declared mere seconds after meeting him. "Gave me gay eyes like right away."
The party quickly collapsed after that: Alex and Dave fought, Brad and the birthday cake revealed Penny's real age, and Penny had an emotional breakdown.
There are certainly plenty of personalities and relationships to delve into here. With the whole group being mutual friends of Dave and Alex, their strained relationship is a great fulcrum to challenge the whole group dynamic.
We're pretty impressed with ABC's newest foray into comedy, but are you? Is 'Happy Endings' a hit or a miss?
