Caroline Kennedy Explains the Special Bond Women Have with Poetry (VIDEO)

by Jeremy Taylor, posted Apr 15th 2011 12:10PM
Caroline Kennedy visited 'The Colbert Report' (weekdays, 11:30PM ET on Comedy Central) to promote her book 'She Walks in Beauty: A Woman's Journey Through Poems,' a collection of some of her favorite poetry.

Of course, the subject matter of the book gave Steven Colbert's obnoxious pundit a chance to express his skepticism about the medium and crack some misogynistic jokes. But when Colbert presented Kennedy with a serious question, she had ready a serious answer.

"Do women have a different approach to poetry?" Colbert wondered.

"Women I think do have a special relationship with poetry," Kennedy responded. "I think it's something that is passed down much more often by mothers and grandmothers to children, and I think women grow up really feeling, living in the world of emotions. And men write about women -- which is really the greatest poetry of all, so that's really most of what this book is.

Kennedy continued, "This [book] is men celebrating women, and women celebrating themselves ... and what can be better than that?"
