'The Vampire Diaries' Season 2, Episode 18 Recap

The Vampire Diaries, Alaric, Klaus['The Vampire Diaries' - 'The Last Dance']

In another world, Matt Davis would've made a fantastic villain.

Alas, though we weren't sure of Alaric's true nature when he first arrived in Mystic Falls last season, Ric turned out to be a pretty good guy (neglecting to tell his girlfriend about his not-so-dead wife being her niece's birth mother notwithstanding).

Thankfully, Davis was able to flex his bad-guy muscles on last night's episode of 'The Vampire Diaries' as the first living embodiment we've seen of the ultimate bad guy: Klaus, the first vampire. It was nice easing into Klaus' wickedness via a friendly face, though he truly is evil -- he made Katherine stab herself in the leg repeatedly just for funsies. Don't worry about her, though, because he doesn't plan on killing her anytime soon -- "I've searched for you for over 500 years. Your death is going to last at least half that long."

Klaus possessing Alaric's body helped establish some important vampire rules: Originals can compel people even when possessing a human body (oh, Dana). If an original is possessing a human body and that body is killed, the human dies but the original goes back to his own body. The "can't enter a home unless invited" rule doesn't apply when originals are possessing human forms. (This is what I took away after two viewings, please do correct me if I'm wrong/misunderstood. It's very likely that's the case.)

So, basically, the only way to avoid someone from the Mystic Falls supernatural crew getting kidnapped and possessed by an original is to never, ever be alone -- I'm envisioning sleepovers at the Salvatore (now Gilbert) Manor and an elementary school field trip-style buddy system for any outside journeys. Though clearly that wouldn't last very long because Elena confuses recklessness for independence on a regular basis. (JUST SAYING.)

To wit: Although Elena is now sole owner of the Salvatore house, the first thing she did after establishing her safe house (no uninvited vampires, except those possessing human friends) was head to school. Why you gotta be so responsible, lady? Or, as Damon put it, "We didn't create a safe house for you to leave it."

The Vampire DiariesBut leave she did, just to go to school (no teenager I've ever met has been so eager to learn). I'm glad we went back there, though, because it's important to remember that these characters are actually supposed to be 17-year-olds. Plus, they had to establish the reason for the '60s decade dance, right? A decade dance with amazing music choices! (The Mamas and the Papas? All those modern covers of '60s songs? Heck, yes.)

Side note: Does Damon wear cardigans now, or is it a '60s dance thing? Because I am totally on board that train. I mean, if he HAS to wear a shirt, obviously.

Once the gang assembled at the dance, Klaus/Alaric (Klaric? Aklaus? Klauric?) caused some amusing mischief (dancing Ric-klaus, LOL) before Bonnie finally confronted him. This is where I apologize for underestimating Bonnie -- I was shocked when she realized Kla-laric wanted to goad her into using all her power so she'd die. And I definitely did not see that major "fake your death" scheme coming from her and Damon, of all people. Though I do get angry sometimes that Bonnie is so blindly devoted to Elena, I understand why she feels like she needs to sacrifice herself.

Truthfully, the death I thought we were building toward all episode was Alaric's, not Bonnie's. In fact, I was so certain they weren't going to kill off the witch for good that I refused to believe it was real. And, of course, just when I started coming to terms with what happened, girlfriend came back to life. I've never been so happier to be tricked in my life.

Because I was so stunned, I didn't even cry when Elena bawled over her friend's body. I did, however, start tearing up when the buddies had their product placement video chat. (I, an adult, cried over a vampire show at work. Sue me, it was touching.)

Damon once again sorta-kinda tried to redeem his past overall awfulness by proving he does, in fact, care about Elena, her friends and her family. He even told his brother, "at the end of the day, I'll be the one to keep her alive" and informed Elena that although she was upset with him for not sharing his plan, "If it comes down to you and the witch again, I will gladly let the witch die. I will always. Choose. You."

Elena thanked him, of course, by heading to the basement and REMOVING THE DAGGER FROM ELIJAH'S BODY, thus bringing him back to life. I mean, the guy's kind of awesome but sweet Jesus, Elena, WHAT DID YOU DOOOOOOOOO?

The Vampire Diaries, Damon, BonnieTouching moments in an otherwise action-packed episode:
The brother-boyfriend bonding between Jeremy and Stefan when Jer told S about the fact that Bonnie will probs die
Jeremy pleading with Bonnie not to let another of his girlfriends die (pour one out for Anna)
The Bonnie-Damon bonding when he told her he didn't want her to die. Awwww!
Stefan comforting Elena when she thought Bonnie was dead (Notice a theme?)
Did I mention that video chat? Because ah mah gah, I'm pretty sure I cried harder than Elena did.

Unexpected sexual chemistry of the night:
Matt and Sheriff Forbes. (Come on, you know you felt it too.) Honestly, I can't even touch on this Matt/Sheriff conspiracy because it's so upsetting. I'm sure it'll come to a head in future episodes, but for now it just makes me sad. Sigh.

'The Vampire Diaries' airs Thursdays at 8PM ET on The CW.

What did you think of the episode? What made you laugh? Cry? Wail inappropriately at your computer screen during a workday?

-WHAT! MATT/SHERRIF FORBES?? no! Unexpected sexual chemistry of the night goes to BONNIE/DAMON . i'm very interested in that relationship .

-i'm trying to think if i've ever cried during a tvd ep. because tonight the tears were flowing. i thought the death was fake until he closed her eyes. thats when i lost it. wow bonnie's never been my fav. but now that she's "died" i've realized i don't want her to really die.

Every day that Elena denies the obvious chemistry between her and Damon is another day that makes me want to her off her myself. I'll stake Stefan if that's what it takes to put these two together...their relationship is so heartbreak always...
Also i was a bit non-plussed by the overly obvious product placement in that scene with Jer and Bonnie who I thought was really dead.
