Nine TV Characters Who Should Have Their Own Prequels

by Chris Harnick, posted Apr 15th 2011 11:20AM
Prequel SpecialsLet's face it: no matter how much screen time our favorite TV characters take up, we're always hungry for more.

Take Sam Axe on 'Burn Notice,' for example. He's played by a lovable, veteran actor, Bruce Campbell, and nails every scene. 'Burn Notice' fans are getting some extra Sam Axe this weekend when the character's backstory is explored in the prequel movie 'Burn Notice: The Fall of Sam Axe' (Sunday, April 17, at 9PM on USA).

But not every beloved character is that lucky. In our dreams where we're network programming heads (what, you don't have those?), here are a few of the prequel/flashbacks we'd green-light in a heartbeat.

The Good WifeDiane and Will, 'The Good Wife'
After a spat that brought them thisclose to dissolving their legal partnership, Diane and Will are closer than ever. A newly united (and fierce) front makes for great TV week after week, but how exactly did they get to where they are today? A prequel movie, episode, Web series (or whatever CBS will give us) exploring how the two forged their friendship under Stern's wing would be beyond entertaining.

Ron SwansonRon Swanson, 'Parks & Recreation'
Any extra dose of the marvelous Ron Swanson would be a welcome bonus, but since the reveal of Duke Silver, haven't you been wondering about his beginnings? Plus, it'll be an excuse to bring Megan Mullally back as Tammy, or a chance to meet the other ex-wife named Tammy. You can never go wrong with Ron Swanson.

Law & Order: SVUDetectives Benson and Stabler, 'Law & Order: SVU'
Before they were part of an elite squad known as the Special Victims Unit, Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler were just ordinary cops. What were they like as beat cops, new to the force? A look following the two as they rose up in the ranks and eventually meeting would be an excellent way to cap off the series ... whenever it ends.

'Grey's Anatomy'Derek and Addison, 'Grey's Anatomy'
Before he was McDreamy, Derek was, well, just Dr. Derek Shepherd. We all know what happened that drove Derek to Seattle, but we haven't seen it. A flashback to Derek and Addison as a married couple -- with Addison sleeping with Mark -- would be a refreshing change of pace for the drama. Plus, more Addison away from 'Private Practice' is a good thing.

True BloodEric and Pam, 'True Blood'
Arguably the two biggest scene-stealers on the HBO series, Eric and Pam would kill (literally and figuratively) in their own show. Really, who doesn't want more Eric and Pam in their lives? While there have been a good number of Eric flashbacks, we'd love to see these two in action really vamping it up. A nice character story examining their dynamic with plenty of sex and blood is just the kind of prequel these two need.

Tell us: What character would you watch in a prequel?

Eric and Pam for sure both Alexander and Kristin are exceptionally talented actors. Kristin is a phenomenal artist and Alexander is just phenomenal.

How about Dr. Webber from Grey's Anatomy? We once saw a younger version ofhimself in an episode how about that. And he was also with Meredith's mother. How about Heddy from NCIS LA? And also Vance from NCIS. How about Rossi from Criminal Minds. He could be shown when he knew Sam Cooper of Crminal Minds Suspect Behavior. How about Cragen from SVU. How about Walter Bishop from Fringe. We can see what he did before he was locked up. Frank Reagan and his father on Blue Bloods; we can see how Frank was before he became Commissioner and his father when he was still a cop. Was Frank like Danny is now? And in case Chuck is cancelled how about a show centered around Casey.
