Soap News: Will Billy Miller Leave 'Y&R'?

by Allison Waldman, posted Apr 18th 2011 3:00PM
billy_miller_the_young_and_the_restless_cbsIn a week when the soap world was filled with tumult, one of the stars of 'The Young and the Restless' is thinking about moving on. Billy Miller is reportedly in talks with 'The Young and the Restless' about renewing his contract, and it's not a done deal that he'll be sticking around. Miller, an Emmy winner for his role as Billy Abbott, is a star on the rise.

Reportedly, he may agree to stay with 'Y&R' if the show will give him enough 'outs' to let him work on other projects. This is a perk that's usually accorded to stars who are popular on the soap and being enticed to work on other projects.

Recently, Miller used time away from 'Y&R' to work on FX's 'Justified' in a multi-episode turn as a pedophile (in which he was excellent).

'Y&R' may be inclined to play ball with Miller, especially in light of the dual ABC axing last week -- actors are thinking twice about counting on soaps for future work. Even 'Y&R,' the top-rated soap in America, may not provide the kind of job security a soap job used to guarantee.

The show's spokesperson had no comment on Miller's status.

Can the Fans Save 'All My Children' and 'One Life to Live'?
In the wake of the announcement that 'All My Children' and 'One Life to Live' were being replaced with 'The Chew' and 'The Revolution,' fans have taken to the Internet to mount a drive to save their soaps.

Chances are that ABC will not alter the plans to end 'AMC' in September 2011 and 'OLTL' in January 2012, but loyal viewers have begun campaigning nonetheless. After all, an outcry from fans did save Elizabeth Herbst's job on 'General Hospital' back in February.

Amidst the general despair and dismay on the set of 'AMC' after learning of the cancellation news, Trent Garrett learned that he was being dumped before the show comes to an end in September.

In his grim/funny tweet, Garrett revealed that budget cuts are the reason behind the firing. Garrett wrote, "Money is very tight at 'AMC' so some actors may not make it to the end. ... Oops. Perhaps I wasn't allowed to say that (regarding my time left). But ironic enough, this is not the week to play nice with my bosses. ...and here I thought I was doing my job to keep the wardrobe budget down with all the scenes without a top. Guess not. Humor helps a bit."

He concluded, "I loved my time at 'All My Children,' and the fans are a giant part of that love. The future has endless possibilities and I look forward to seeing what will happen."

Marty May Get That Happy Ending
We reported last week that two-time Emmy winner Susan Haskell was leaving 'OLTL'. The latest news is that the soap is contemplating a happy ending for Haskell's character, Marty Saybrooke. Soap Opera Digest reports that Haskell's partner, soap star Thorsten Kaye (ex-Zach, 'AMC'), could be lured back to give Marty a reunion with her great love, Patrick. Apparently, there was a casting call for a day player to portray a 'Thorsten Kaye Body Double' with 'long hair.'

Of course, the character of Patrick is dead and buried, but perhaps Marty's reconciliation with him is ethereal. 'OLTL' has a great history of out of this world storytelling, including trips back in time to the Old West and Viki's heavenly visitations with an angel. And there was even a sci-fi angle with the legendary city of Eterna.

In other words, if Thorsten does come back for Haskell's exit, anything it possible story-wise.

susan_lucci_agnes_nixon_emmys_2010Nixon Weighs In
Amid the many comments from stars like Susan Lucci and Nathan Fillion about 'AMC' and 'OLTL' posting their closing notices, the creator of both show, Agnes Nixon issued a statement to Entertainment Weekly. She wrote:

"ABC's decision to cancel 'All My Children' and 'One Life to Live' saddens me greatly. I treasure the decades that the worlds of Pine Valley and Llanview were brought to life by our talented casts and crews. I appreciate that the network allowed our teams to break new dramatic ground and always supported our commitment to the honest portrayal of social issues. We hope we have entertained our viewers and perhaps even educated them along the way.

My deep gratitude goes to all the talented people who have contributed ... over these many years; we were always family, made up of writers, producers, directors, actors, crews. Equally important in that family are our loyal fans who shared this journey with us. Although ABC has concluded there is no longer a place for our shows on their network, I will do everything possible to keep them alive. God bless you all."

I think that Billy Miller adds flavor to the role he plays. Many actors/actresses are allowed time off to work on other projects and it is only fair that this applies to all. It would be a terrible loss to let this fine actor leave. I know that he would do well in any part that he would land, he makes you beleive in the role he is playing. So, I wish him all the best in whatever he decidedes to do.

I hope Billy Miller stays! He's fantastic as Billy and seems so easy going and such a great actor. I'd love to see him on other shows as well, though, so will just hope that he is happy with whatever he chooses.
