'The Amazing Race: Unfinished Business' Season 18, Episode 8 Recap
['The Amazing Race: Unfinished Business' - 'I Cannot Deal With Your Psycho Behavior (Austria)']After a couple of weeks in India, 'TAR' shifted gears and climates by taking the teams to the snowy streets of Austria. But before they could get there, we had to be introduced to the book-end blatant product placement of the week, which also happened to be the prize for the team who won this leg of the race: a 2012 Ford Focus.
In fact, it was so integrated into the show, Phil Keoghan even gave them one of their clues from within the MyFord Touch System. It seemed like a pretty straightforward clue, but that didn't stop Gary and Mallory from missing the gist of it completely.
It was not a great start for the last parent-child team on the 'Race.' But it was the last romantically involved couple that would provide the most drama this week, as Kent and Vyxsin fought throughout the entire leg!
Once again, Jet and Cord set off on their own, and it led to them spending much of the episode alone. Considering the luck they've had, it seemed an unnecessary gamble to book a later flight, even if it was a straight flight. They were going on the possibility of a delay impacting the layover of the other five teams, but why not just get on the same flight with everyone else and trust in yourself to accelerate ahead?
This method meant that either they would maybe get ahead if there was some kind of delay, or they'd be 30 minutes behind the pack. I love the cowboys dearly, but sometimes I just don't understand their strategic thinking.
To their credit, though, they managed to catch up to the other teams and even pulled ahead of two of them by the time the Detour was done. This Detour was interesting in that it looked like one of the tasks was downright impossible. Three teams took on the "Quick & Easy Meal" which saw them attempting to finish a big meal in the 12 minutes it took a Ferris wheel to do one rotation. All three teams failed and had to switch to the other side, putting them automatically toward the bottom.
It was to Kisha and Jen's credit that they managed to do both Detour tasks and still came out ahead of the cowboys, or maybe it was just a testament of how far the boys were behind. The Detour forcing half the teams to do both tasks turned out to be a blessing for the boys, who relied on their strength in the Long Hard Walk challenge.Kent, however, saw it as an opportunity to complain and whine far worse than Vyxsin has ever done. In fact, he's one of the whiniest and apparently physically weakest contestants we've ever had. I laughed out loud when he started whining "No!" because of a door.
What perhaps stunned me, though, is that he bitched and moaned his way to a second-place finish in that challenge, behind Zev and Justin, who had one hell of a smooth leg. They raced neck-and-neck with Flight Time and Big Easy throughout this leg, and they even came in first and second at the Pit Stop. Their only hiccup came when they took a wrong turn with the Freudian couch and went up extra flights of steps. But they quickly recovered.
The Road Block, which had teams perform the duties of a chimney sweep, was disappointingly easy as all they had to do was drop a weighted ball down a chimney three times. Basically, they finished in the order they arrived, with everyone taking about the same amount of time to do it. That makes it no more challenging than a Route Info grab at a Clue Box. You can do better than this, 'Race'!
Flight Time and Big Easy were first out of the Road Block, but some trouble on the roads led to a second-place finish. That gave the win for this leg to Zev and Justin, who not only won the cars, but pulled ahead of Gary and Mallory as the team who's won the most (now three) legs.
I was perhaps the most stunned by Kent and Vyxsin's success this leg, as their whining and fighting was driving me absolutely crazy. They were at each other's throats nonstop, and then they turned around and had their best leg ever in two times running the 'Race'? Vyxsin even suggested maybe they should fight all the time, to which I'd like to vote a vehement "NO"!
The rest of the teams finished in the same order in which they came out of the Road Block, with Gary and Mallory coming in dead last -- they never recovered after having to double up on the Detour. But Phil had good news: Another non-elimination leg meant they'd race another day. It also meant they will have a Speed Bump task to perform, which will give the cowboys some extra time to make more goofy decisions and possibly still avoid elimination.
FINISHING ORDER:
1) Zev/Justin
2) Flight Time/Big Easy
3) Kent/Vyxsin
4) Kisha/Jen
5) Jet/Cord
6) Gary/Mallory [non-elimination leg]
