Carol Burnett Talks About the Anonymous Backer Who Helped Launch Her Career (VIDEO)

by Jeremy Taylor, posted Apr 21st 2011 2:30PM
Carol Burnett has had a legendary show business career which, she told 'Piers Morgan Tonight' (weekdays, 9 PM ET on CNN) is partly thanks someone she barely knows.

In 1956, Burnett was student at UCLA when her professor asked her to perform at a black-tie function for credit. After she was done, she began stuffing hors devours into her purse, so she could take them home to her grandmother.

Suddenly she felt a tap on the shoulder. But instead of reprimanding her, the man who got her attention complimented her performance, and asked about her future plans. When she said she wanted to go to New York to pursue a career in theater, he made her a startling offer: $1,000 to help get her relocated there.

There were some stipulations:

"Don't reveal my name, use the money to go to New York, pay me back in five years, if you can, no interest, and if you are successful help other people out," was how Burnett explained his advice.

Burnett faithfully followed the man's instruction. She actually met him again, 20 years later, and learned that he had also never mentioned to anyone that he was the one who launched the career of the great Carol Burnett.
