'Cougar Town' Moment: Things Get Hairy When Jules Babysits Stan (VIDEO)

'Cougar Town' - 'Baby's A Rock N Roller'The direction this episode of 'Cougar Town' went in was interesting. First, there was the plot where Andy plays Laurie's wingman as she tries to get back into "bed 'em and ditch 'em" mode. Then you had Bobby trying all he could to get up super-early and catch a free tee time.

But the most intriguing plot was where Ellie challenged Jules to babysit Stan for a night. Jules thinks that bringing up a kid shouldn't be any more difficult in your 40s than it was in your 20s, when she did it. Ellie knows differently, and the night Jules and Grayson spent with Stan bore that out.

Stan's a good kid, but he's got his own foibles, like a long list of things he's allergic to, and the ability to work locks after getting into things he shouldn't. So, Jules hides all the dangerous things in the house -- knives, a brulee torch, the merlot -- in her lockable pantry / safe room, not thinking that Stan would ever make his way in there. She was wrong.

Say what you will about how much time Ellie spends with Stan -- "Oh, yeah, you have a son!" Jules says to her during a typical morning Cul de Sac Crew coffee klatch -- but she knows her son pretty well. "He's like Houdini," she tells Jules, knowing that they've got him penned in a couch fort / baby prison. In other words, she knew he was going to get out and make a beeline to the one place he shouldn't be -- the pantry.

He manages to lock himself in, scaring the hell out of Jules. Red liquid seeps out from under the door, but Grayson confirms that "it's just Merlot." Jules, of course, isn't sure if he's just spilling it or he's trying to pour it in his little mouth. When Grayson spies him picking up peanut butter, one of the things he may be allergic to, Jules gives him an antihistamine needle.

"I'm not going to stab a baby!" he says. "Wimp!" she replies.

Ellie eventually has to bail her out, luring Stan out with crackers. The upshot is that Jules acknowledges that, yes, it's harder to raise a kid when you're in your 40s, and she's happy she doesn't have to do that. One problem: the night has only strengthened Grayson's desire to have a kid.

Interesting twist, right? We may not see this manifest itself now, but you can be sure to see more of it next season, as Jules and Grayson get more serious and they have to address the question. So, what seemed like the usual goofy-but-funny 'Cougar Town' plot at the start has real implications for the series going forward. Clever, isn't it?

'Cougar Town' airs Wednesdays at 9:30PM ET on ABC.

Modest Complexity

I cracked up when Bobby passes out while driving the golf cart and puts it in the pond...that was so fitting of him. 6 am? That's too much haha (you can watch again at http://vimeo.com/22869546 )

Also, thought I love that song they used for the scene, "Wait Up" by Tokyo Police Club - it's so so catchy when they start 'whoo whoo' ing.
