James Durbin Takes Muse Up an Octave and Earns Rave Reviews on 'American Idol' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Apr 21st 2011 12:25AM
James Durbin, 'American Idol'James Durbin certainly put on a spectacle when he decided to tackle Muse's 'Uprising' on this week's 'American Idol' (Wed., 8PM ET on FOX). He entered the stage with a drum line in full costume sporting a militarized look of his own.

Steven Tyler, in fact, jokingly accused Durbin of taking the outfit from his own closet. "You'd be surprised how expensive it costs to look this cheap," he quipped.

With a much harder rock flare than the original, Durbin also took a chance on a much higher octave during the closing chorus. As Randy Jackson revealed, this was a challenge presented to Durbin by Muse lead singer Matthew Bellamy.

'American Idol' airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8PM ET on FOX.

Jackson said Durbin "slayed it," while Jennifer Lopez made the early prediction that it would be "theatrically the best performance of the night." Durbin performed second, so it was an ambitious claim.

Do you think he lived up to the hype? What did you think of his take on Muse?

James has butchered Muse, and he destroyed a 30 Seconds to Mars song tonight. I'm not sure what the judges hear, because all I hear is and off pitch screamer. He doesn't have the depth or range to sing any of the songs that he tries to. I seriously hope that the majority of America isn't as tone deaf as everyone has to be on this board that thinks he should actually win a singing competition.

I have no clue what everyone loves about James. He sounds like he is making a torture tape to get people to confess for their crimes. He is NOT a good singer. He is never in key. He screams anytime he can and is way overdone. Putting aside all of his issues that he has and looking just at his singing, he is the worst singer in the competition. He maybe a good performer, but a HORRIBLE singer. I am waiting for him to break out into Swing Low, Sweet Chariot with all those screams. Totally works. (please note the sarcasm)

people with ears that are actually trained to hear what the correct key and pitches are know that james durbin sucks ass. and his style/screeching annoying crap should never have been resurrected from the 1980's. I didn't understand why adam lambert was popular and i prefer him to durbin since he really could sing. But james is just an adam lambert wannabe with about half the talent. I'm sure he's a nice guy though so i do feel kind of bad saying that. Casey and Hayley are my favorites to win, both usually have perfect pitch and (this is opinion) have great style. plus hayley's beautiful and Casey is adorable. Plus their names rhyme, maybe they should have some crazy talented babies together. if hayley won't i certainly will! love them, and the show, but it's time for james and jacob to go please.

I think Steven Tyler is a blessing for American Idol! His wisdom, his kindness, his comments have truly been instrumental in helping singers like James Durbin shape himself to a successful career. I also believe that James Durbin would be successful regardless of Steven's comments, but when you watch this season of shows, the whole pace has changed with the judges comments and for the better. Jennifer Lopez is beautiful and wholesome and Randy Jackson is bang on and not as tough as he use to be. Simon was way too harsh and critical, Ellen didn't know how to critique a musician and Paula was too ditzy. The Producers have really got a good show this season and definitely the right mix of judges and talent.

JAMES DURBIN IS A RARE COMMODITY. HE HAS ACCOMPLISHED SO MUCH BY JUST BEING DETERMINED. HE TREATS HIS AUTISM LIKE IT ISN'T THERE. GO JAMES..............YOU TRULY ARE " THE IDOL FOR AMERICA"

A VOICE LIKE WE HAVEN'T HEARD SINCE ADAM LAMBERT. THE PUBLIC GOT IT WRONG THEN. CAN YOU REMEBER THE KID'S NAME THAT WON INSTEAD OF LAMBERT?????????? GOOD LUCK JAMES....YOU ARE A SENSATION!

James Durbin was horrible last night. His performance was desperate and out of tune. The screaming was truly painful. He cannot sing on key from start to finish. Can you imagine going to see him in concert? Ouch!

Holy **** are you kidding me? Apparently you don't know what incredible talent is, I'm sure you're a young teenage girl that is obsessed with some pathetic teenage boy like, oh what's his name? Oh right, the forgetable, one trick pony, scotty.

Ya gotta remember...even if James doesn't win, he'll have a major career. It might even be better for him if he doesn't, as he could avoid that AI winner!!!! stigma. Look at Jennifer Hudson with an Oscar in her possession. James could pretty much take his pick of musicians and put together an amazing band right now. Kid's got deadly pipes!
