'Survivor: Redemption Island' Season 22, Episode 9 Recap

Steve & Phillip, 'Survivor: Redemption Island'['Survivor: Redemption Island' - 'Rice Wars']

"One man should not have this much power on an island, but I'm grateful that I do." --Rob

Well that was ... uncomfortable. Thanks for that, by the way, Phillip. Clearly, all that time in the sun is starting to bake Phillip's brain a little. Maybe if he got a few hundred more feathers for that headband, he could get some shade on his scalp and cooler heads would prevail around camp.

If I was worried that the seeming inevitable one-by-one elimination of the former Zapatera tribe was going to make these next few episodes boring -- and I was -- those fears can be put to rest. As long as Phillip is bringing the crazy, things are going to be very interesting indeed.

This week also saw our first duel since the merge, with three competitors facing off. We still have no idea when any of them might return to the game, but as everyone from Murlonio was there, we got to see Matt's looks of discomfort under their scrutiny.

We already know he feels stupid, but I'm pretty sure the hurt and betrayal he also feels resurfaced when looking up at those Ometepe faces. While we didn't see it, I wouldn't have been surprised if Rob even had a knowing smirk for him.

Rob was very well behaved and quiet throughout this episode. He's playing his end-game strategy right now, by letting everyone else carry on and get dramatic, so he won't stand out in a negative way at this critical time in the game. There's nothing to do, after all, until Zapatera is gone completely.

If I thought Phillip was slipping out there, Matt appears to be struggling harder than anyone. He started the episode in prayer, admitting he didn't want to be part of the game, but I think that was just fatigue and a little bit of a pity-party going on. If he really wanted out, he could quit. He's just lamenting that his own naiveté has led to him spending the vast majority of his time on Redemption Island.

He hasn't been able to form any lasting bonds, as he's had to eliminate all of his bunkmates to stick around. His is the loneliest experience in the game, and it's starting to take its toll on him. But, with faith and skill, he pulled off another victory, of sorts.

Matt, 'Survivor: Redemption Island'This time around, Matt only needed to come in first or second to stick around, so he settled for second -- the first time he hasn't come in first. That honor went to Mike, whom Rob sent there to beat Matt. So that part worked, but David didn't beat him, which means he's still a potential thorn in Rob's side.

At this point, I'm not sure if Matt would win the million dollars if he returns late in the game and makes it into the Finals. He'll have spent virtually the entire competition sequestered from everyone, so there is no alliance and no social game there. All they'll have to go on is that he was great in the Duels, but was stupid enough to get blindsided in the same way by the same people twice.

Back at Murlonio, I was laughing and enjoying watching Zapatera stuff themselves with their tribe rice while Ometepe was still rationing. As the tribes never truly merged socially, they've kept even their supplies separate. And then it all got ugly and incredibly uncomfortable when Steve called Phillip a lunatic and said he was crazy.

In Phillip's mind, these are equivalent terms to the n-word. Now, I can't speak of Phillip's experiences growing up and how people around him might have used racist substitutes, but there was no indication that Steve was doing this. Phillip has consistently acted like a crazed lunatic since this game started.

Then, how about the gall of Phillip? He got all high and mighty to Steve and Julie about how everyone should share and everything is equal, when a few scenes prior he'd been stealing their rice. He even said he would have them begging him for rice after he stole their container to put the nearly-ruined Ometepe rice in.

I think it's about time to get off that high horse there, buddy.

At the Challenge, Rob showed dominance through two rounds of competition and won Immunity, thus cementing his strategy to keep Ometepe strong. In fact, the crazier Phillip acts, the more it seems Rob wants to take him all the way. Who could blame him?

Zapatera hoped for a miracle from some of the Ometepe people who had simply had their fill of Phillip. The edit tried to convince us that some of them might be ready to get rid of the former federal agent, but I think we all knew better. It was just a matter of who on Zapatera was going to go.

Julie, 'Survivor: Redemption Island'I loved that Julie admitted she was the one who'd stolen and buried Phillip's shorts. Especially after Phillip said he used his training as a federal agent to definitively point the finger of blame for that deed on Steve. As much as I'm not a fan of that kind of needless dirty play, it can be funny in the right situation, as when Russell's hat was thrown in the fire a few seasons back or when Rupert stole everyone's shoes even longer ago.

Perhaps it was because of her admission, or maybe she was just seen as a bigger Challenge threat, but Julie was sent packing by the former Ometepe.

And then there were two.

"Guess you're not gonna ever find your shorts." --Julie to Phillip after her elimination

'Survivor: Redemption Island' airs Wednesdays, 8PM ET on CBS.

Ok, Phillip needs to go. He is seriously crazy, and with a machete in his hand, dangerous! The accusations he made last night were uncalled for and he should have been pulled for them! Steve in NO way was racist! Also, how can he accuse Zapatera of not sharing when Phillips group are the ones who set up the "separate tribes" thing in the first place. And while he's not sharing his bed or tarp with Zapa, he expects them to share their rice????? WTH???? And why was Julie chosen when Steve was only a second behind Rob in the challenge win?? Rob's ego is getting as bad as Russell's was. Russell was a character and made stuff interesting, Rob is just an egomaniac and they are all following him like lambs to slaughter!!! This season is just not good.

So, let me get this straight. If I call someone "CRAZY" it is a racial slur? To have allowed Phillip to remain one more minute in their camp was appalling! He is crazy and a nut case! He is toxic and full of it. Rob thinks he's the Godfather and Phillip thinks he is some warrior God. It is Crazy Island. He put the fear and guilt in the white folk and they swallowed the bait. Ick.

matt should have gone out with Dave. Sick of his god this and god that. Why keep two on redemtion island. I'm thinking if Matt came in third the show would have kicked the bottom two out. But they want him back in. Could be the sadistic side of Burnet showing. And I would keep a eye on Phillip, he's about to go Columbine.........

I decided to save this episode. If in the future I accidently ingest poison, I will only have to watch it again to induce vomiting. I'm not sure if it was Phillips phony black rage act, or Jeff's disgusting pontification in support of poor Phillip that made last nights show the most sickening survivor yet. This show just can't get any worse. My suggestion would be to fire the first graders that are writing these mind numbing scripts.
