Happy Earth Day! A Salute to Five Eco-Friendly Characters

by Chris Harnick, posted Apr 22nd 2011 12:00PM
Lisa SimpsonWe wouldn't be true TV nerds if we didn't say we've learned a lot about the environment from our favorite characters.

In fact, some of our favorite shows feature very Earth-conscious characters.

To celebrate Earth Day and those who are making a difference (even if it's fictional), AOL TV presents our five favorite environment-lovin' TV characters.

Lisa Simpson, 'The Simpsons'
Not only is she a vegetarian -- yes, there are environmental benefits in being a vegetarian -- Lisa cares deeply about the environment. After all, 'The Simpsons Movie' kicks off with an environmental crisis and Lisa is right there to lead the charge in the cleanup. "Lisa believes in leaving the Earth a cleaner and better place than she found it," Yeardley Smith, the voice of Lisa Simpson, said in 2001.

Watch what inspired Lisa's crusade below.

Topanga Lawrence, 'Boy Meets World'
Introduced as the daughter of two hippies, Topanga was the ultimate flower-child crush of Cory Matthews. She was weird in all the right ways and totally in love with the Earth ... for at least a few seasons. Classic Topanga will always be remembered, especially for this poem below.

Captain Planet, 'Captain Planet'
I mean, come on, he's our hero! Who else would you trust to bring pollution down to zero? Big props to the Planteteers too.

Sean Tolkey, 'The Big C'
You don't get much more environmentalist than Sean. When he's not eating other people's discarded food, he's protesting outside big box stores and lecturing strangers on their harmful practices.

Chris Traeger, 'Parks & Recreation'
He is literally one of the biggest friends of the Earth on TV today. When he's not pushing vegetable loaf (in place of cake!), he's busy trying to educate his staff on the perils of red meat. This health nut knows what's up.
