'Smallville': A Peek At the Superman Suit

by Chris Harnick, posted Apr 22nd 2011 4:35PM
SmallvilleWith the final season of 'Smallville' wrapping up and the "no tights, no flights" doctrine out the window, it was only time before the Superman suit officially made its way to the series.

In promo pics from 'Prophecy,' the penultimate episode of the series, Clark and Lois are seen with the suit in the Fortress.

The suit is definitely more 'Superman Returns' rather than 'Superman.' The "S" is smaller and the material looks sort of scaly.

'Smallville' executive producer Kelly Souders teased 'Prophecy' to our own Laura Prudom.

Besides the return of Kara, Souders said there's a "poignant takeaway" for Lois and Clark moment at the end of the episode.

"I'd say [Kara's] impact on Clark is unbeknownst to him, more than anything," Souders said on the subject of Kara. "What she's doing is a little bit behind the scenes, how about that?"

Tell us: What do you think of the suit? Too soon to judge without seeing Tom Welling in the costume?

SAAWEEET! they made a huge mistake by not taking this cast & having them all star in the new movie. it would of been perfect for the movie to pick up where the show ended. Tom Welling is the perfect big screen Superman!
I think the perfect ending to the show would of been Martha sitting at the kitchen table sewing the cape. then she takes it out of the sewing machine & shakes it,filling the screen with with the flapping cape, cutting to the cape flapping in the breeze as Superman stands on top of the Daily Planet's roof.

Ummm... it IS the costume from Superman Returns.

We've known this since the FIRST episode of this season when Lois opened the box, and it was the costume from Superman Returns.

This isn't news to anyone. The show runners even confirmed it's the Superman Returns costume.

Just guessing here, but they decided it would be easier (and cheaper) to just use this costume as opposed to creating their own, which could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, who knows?

1. Is that...a SHIRT COLLAR?!?!? What the hell? Wasn't aware that Kryptonians were into polo shirts.

2. Since it's been clear for a long time that "Smallville" is set in it's own universe, why the need to use a costume so close to the one from "Superman Returns?" Fans who wanted to see Welling in a Superman movie got shot down multiple times with "We don't want to confuse audiences by putting him into a movie that wouldn't be set in the 'Smallville' Universe" -- and yet here we go with a clear nod to that film. There was a real opportunity to play with the design here -- make it their own -- and instead they just rummaged through Brandon Routh's closet.

3. On another site there was a pic of what appeared to be Clark looking at the costume. I hope for the sake of the "Smallville" execs they aren't pulling back on the plan to put him in the suit and instead just end with him looking at it. There will probably be a mutiny if there's no 'payoff'

Overall, I'm going with 'Meh.'

I'm not sure if that's a shirt collar or possibly just where the cape hooks onto the shirt.
