Soap News: ABC Daytime Honcho Feeling the Heat? Genie Francis Spices Up CBS and More
When ABC's head of daytime television, Brian Frons, canceled 'All My Children' and 'One Life to Live' in favor of a food program and exercise/diet show, he riled the fans of daytime around the world. That included advertisers, most notably Hoover. Now, according to the New York Post, Frons' decision may cost him his job.In addition to Hoover, other big-name advertisers like Hershey's and L'Oreal have been hearing from consumers that they should yank their commercials from the ABC soaps to pressure the network into reconsidering the decision. Also, the ladies from 'The View' and Kelly Ripa from 'Live With Regis and Kelly' were reportedly told to stop bemoaning the end of 'AMC' and 'OLTL.'
ABC's spokesperson has denied both assertions, as well as the idea that Frons might be axed for canceling the soaps. However, in recent weeks the Nielsen ratings for 'AMC' and 'OLTL' have risen, which may cause some powers that be at ABC to have second thoughts about Frons' decision. By the way, if you want to protest the cancellations, check out SoapCentral.com's Support Our Soaps Web page for how to let your voice be heard.
Oprah's Address to Soap Fans
Amid all the hubbub about ABC's cancelling 'AMC' and 'OLTL,' some soap fans have turned to Oprah Winfrey to save the day. In response to the deluge on her message boards and the Harpo email boxes being stuffed by soap fans asking Oprah to put the cancelled shows on OWN, Winfrey's cable network, Oprah shared her thoughts. She was sympathetic, but not interested in being a savior.
It seems like a viable idea for her network to take on the shows, especially since OWN is struggling to find and hold its audience. However, speaking like a true television executive, Oprah's address which aired on 'Extra,' was a firm no. Check it out:
Call me crazy, but if Oprah has the kind of clout and cash we know she has, offering a year of 'AMC' and 'OLTL' on OWN to gauge if it was a viable option for the future, makes sense. Oprah would garner acclaim, and even if it cost her company, it would be worth it in PR terms. That's my take ... what do you think?
Take a Look at GenieIn just a few weeks, Genie Francis, the legendary Laura on 'General Hospital,' will make her bow on 'The Young and the Restless' as Genevieve, Cane's mother. The network has seized the opportunity to promote the new addition to the cast with this enticing photo which CBS Daytime tweeted just the other day.
This should be a really interesting storyline development for 'Y&R.' Cane was killed, but actor Daniel Goddard has continued working on the show. It looked like Cane was an angel or a figment of Lily's imagination or perhaps a ghost.
But last week, Lily was able to touch Cane and he left muddy footprints outside their house. If Cane's not really dead, has his mother -- Genie's character -- had a hand in faking his death? Do you see any clues in the photo, like the fact that they're both dressed in black? I'd love to hear your theories.
Bruce Is Back
If you've been watching 'GH,' you know that Bruce Weitz is back as Anthony Zacchara. The character has somehow managed to get himself sprung from prison so he can wreak some new havoc in Port Charles. Watch for Anthony to even make a pass or two at Carly, if you can believe that one!
Weitz, a primetime vet who won an Emmy for 'Hill Street Blues,' spoke with Michael Logan of TV Guide and had some provocative thoughts about daytime acting:
"Everybody should get down on their knees and thank God that they have a job. It's such a blessing to get to go to work these days and if you also have fun, which I do, then that's just icing on the cake. The people at 'GH' are terrific. Really nice. I have yet to meet a prune," he said.
Tamara Alert
Tune in this Tuesday, April 26, for Tamara Braun's return to 'Days of Our Lives.' She won't be Ava Vitali, however; as previously reported, Tamara is taking over the role of Nicole from Natalia Livingston.
