'Cougar Town' Moment -- Bobby Hits the Wrong Ball

Brian Van Holt as Bobby Cobb in 'Cougar Town'There's always crazy stuff going on in 'Cougar Town.' Busy Philipps' character, Laurie Keller, now has a Twitter feed, @thelarmy, where you see her supposedly tweeting while things are going on in the episode. Then there's Jules and her penchant for bodily-shutting-down when embarrassed; wouldn't you shut down, though, if a bunch of 6-year-olds tell you that the name "Richard Stands" isn't in the pledge of allegiance?

In a lot of ways, though, there's nothing crazier than the life of Bobby Cobb. He lives on a boat in the middle of a parking lot. He creates games like Penny Can. He's still good friends with his ex-wife. So, when Bobby finally got his act together long enough to qualify for a professional golf tournament, you knew that he wouldn't be challenging Tiger Woods at the top of the leader board.

In fact, it was quite the opposite. At one hole, he hit a fantastic long and risky shot that hit the green. One problem: It wasn't his ball. And when you hit your opponent's ball, you not only get a two-shot penalty, you get embarrassed in front of a large gallery of fans as well as a small but influential Golf Channel audience.

Of course, Jules thinks it's all her fault, as she sent bad vibes from Grayson's bar through the TV all the way to where Bobby was playing. Why? Because she flubbed the pledge, she thinks the entire town knows about it -- Barb knows, so maybe she's right about that -- and she wanted the embarrassing attention shifted to someone else.

"Please God, shift the spotlight from me on to someone else." Little did she know that it would be Bobby. She figured someone in the bar would poke their eye out with a swizzle stick or something. But, after Bobby hit the great shot and celebrated by riding his club like a horse, he found out the bad news. Not only did it ruin his great mood, but it pretty much screwed him for the tournament.

But, even Bobby knows that mojo sent via digital cable isn't why he screwed up. He had a caddy in Andy that was so preoccupied with getting water out of his ear that he wobbled around the course like he was drunk; he even fell into a sand trap at one point. And his son Travis was likely exhausted; he was devastated that he didn't notice.

But Bobby Cobb knows how to make the best of things. "I do a lot of embarrassing things," he tells Jules later on; the trick is to own up to it. He's dubbed Bobby "Wrong Balls" Cobb, so he makes a t-shirt out of it and takes endorsement deals. It's a lesson for him to impart to Jules, which is why she went back to the library to re-do the pledge... until she said "Under God... invisible..."

I do like that Bobby is starting to get his life back together; having him be a constant failure for the run of the show would have gotten old pretty quickly. But, as we see Travis hang out with his father more often, you start to wonder how much Bobby's attitude and lifestyle are starting to rub off on him. As Bill Lawrence has said, Travis is due for a crash, and there's no better place to fall than the deck of the 'Jealous Much?'... right?

This episode was pretty disappointing. I guess not all of them can be winners like they have been, but I expected more laugh out loud moments than we got.
