In what was described as a likely bittersweet moment for him, Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish arrived fashionably late to Westminster Abbey for the Royal Wedding (Fri., 6AM ET on FOX). It was the first time Sir Elton had been there since the funeral of his good friend Princess Diana, where he performed his tribute to her, 'Candle in the Wind (1997).'
John was subdued certainly from the lavish garb that makes up his stage persona, opting instead for a bespoked Richard James morning suit, though he did add a flash of flare with a gold waistcoat and purple tie. Furnish matched in a bespoked morning suit of his own, designed by Henry Poole, as the couple made their way inside.
Sky News commentator Kay Burley indicated that John and Furnish are "the first civil partnership to attend a Royal wedding." Civil partnerships were legally recognized in the UK with a 2004 Act. John and Furnish so affirmed their relationship in a December 2005 ceremony.
