'Cougar Town' Moment - Jules Loses Her Wine to a 'Shark'

'Cougar Town'There's a reason why, instead of doing full-fledged reviews of 'Cougar Town,' I just concentrate on moments: it's because, in a lot of ways, each episode is organized as a series of moments, rather than one with an A-story and a B-story.

Sure, there has been the recent through-line of Travis and his quest to get his girlfriend Kirsten to stay by asking her to marry him. But the rest of each episode is generally distinguished by its easygoing hilarity.

I'm talking about scenes like Bobby and Andy sumo wrestling in Jules' house, or Grayson's schoolgirl-like crush over Lou Diamond Phillips, or Laurie getting a tiny wine glass named "Little Richard" as punishment for creating "The Council," which served as a kangaroo court for the Cul de Sac Crew. So the review becomes more about which scenes were funny than about how the series is progressing.

And the scene I picked to talk about this week is no exception. It was funny, sure, but also silly and basically was there to show how different tidbits of story can come together for one heck of a punchline in a scene.

The scenario: After Jules criticizes Bobby's parking lot boat living, Bobby and the gang give her crap because she's too pampered. So the bet is set: Bobby and Jules switch living quarters for the weekend, and people put down wagers to see if Jules can make it through without her four towels, her eye creams, and lots of spending cash.

One warning from Bobby: You must feed "The Shark." He's a homeless guy who prowls the parking lot where Bobby's boat is anchored. He's got a surfboard in his shopping cart and gets really aggressive if he's not fed. Just like real sharks, right?

Of course, the "food" that's nearest and dearest to Jules heart is -- you guessed it -- red wine. And, with the 20 bucks Bobby gave her to spend for the weekend she bought two bottles, most of which disappeared within a day. So when "The Shark" came around, with only the fin from his surfboard visible, he went right for the blood in the water.

What's great about this scene is that, even though the references to 'Jaws' are going to be the obvious way to go, it's still executed well. From the use of the famous theme that grows to that frightening crescendo, to Jules growling Roy Scheider-style "We're gonna need a bigger boat," it was all well done and generated some big laughs.

And, when Jules lost what was left of her wine, slumping down in defeat on the deck of the Jealous Much?, we knew that she was going to be in for a rough time. But she survived, dry skin, greasy hair and all. Heck, she even let Dog Travis give shake himself dry all over her. Jules may be prissy and particular and not all that bright, but at least she can adapt and survive.

'Cougar Town' airs Wedensdays at 9:30PM ET on ABC.
