With so few contestants left in the competition, 'American Idol' (Thu., 8PM ET on FOX) is resorting to more and more silliness to fill their hour-long results show each week. This time around, they brought in Chef Gordon Ramsay to see which Idol is the best chef.

The challenge was to cook an omelet, and it quickly became clear that for many of them, it was possibly their first time ever in a kitchen.

"James, it would help if the stove was turned on," Ramsay told the resident rocker. Later, he would describe James's creation as "hard as rock."

Only Lauren seemed to have game. "This is how we do it in the South," she said with a smile.

'American Idol' airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8PM ET on FOX.

Her concoction won the chef over and she was declared the official winner. In our estimation, hers was the only one that actually resembled a classic omelet, so it wasn't much of a competition.

It was, however, a fun diversion and a nice chance to put some more personality on the contestants. In recent seasons, they've almost been a blank slate manufactured through the 'Idol' machine.

Allowing us to connect with them in more personal ways like this helps us create more of an emotional connection to them as people.
