Jodie Foster Can't Defend Mel Gibson While Promoting Their Film on 'Late Show' (VIDEO)

Jodie Foster, 'Late Show with David Letterman'Jodie Foster and Mel Gibson have a friendly relationship dating back 15 years. Recently, they worked together on the new film, 'The Beaver,' which Foster directed. But it looks like that friendship may have taken quite a hit from his more recent antics in the public eye, based on her remarks on 'Late Show' (Weeknights, 11:35PM ET on CBS).

Before David Letterman even finished asking her if she could defend his actions, she vehemently said, "No!"

"He's wonderful in the film," she said, carefully not saying much of anything about his character as a person. It must be an incredibly awkward position for her to be in. Of course, after the investment and work that went into 'The Beaver,' she wants it to be a success.

But it's hard to come out and simply talk about how great Mel Gibson is, considering his standing in the public eye. It's going to be a risky venture trying to make 'The Beaver' a hit, as some people will find it difficult to to separate Mel Gibson the actor from Mel Gibson the belligerent drunk who's been accused of everything from sexism and racism to homophobia and anti-semitism.

She did say that his most recent antics occurred "mostly after we wrapped," if that helps any.
