The Browns Discuss Leaving Utah to Avoid Polygamy Charges on 'Sister Wives' (VIDEO)
The Brown family took a huge risk legally when they agreed to put their lives on television. The premiere of 'Sister Wives' (Sun., 9PM ET on TLC) brought in solid ratings, which would seem to be accomplishing the Browns' intentions of making more people aware of the polygamist lifestyle.Unfortunately, it also made the Utah authorities aware of the Browns, and they immediately began putting together a felony case to prosecute Kody for polygamy. As such, the family reached a critical decision just before Christmas 2010.
"Historically, when a family's investigated or prosecuted for polygamy, they break up the family," Kody said. "And so we have decided that we're going to move out of the state."
The five parents had only told their four oldest children, so that the younger ones could enjoy a final Christmas in Utah in blissful ignorance that the family may well be uprooted and relocated.
