'Dancing With the Stars' Recap: Week Eight Elimination

by Katy Kroll, posted May 11th 2011 1:00AM
Forget 'The Karate Kid.' Ralph Macchio's biggest role right now is the lead in 'The Comeback Kid, Part 2,' as he managed to once again hang on for at least another week of 'Dancing With the Stars' after dragging the bottom of the leaderboard for the second time.

I had resigned myself to the fact that personal fave Ralph was most likely heading home because a knee injury forced him out of rehearsals and onto the dance floor sporting a limp. He wound up lagging behind everyone else by a whopping six points, and there's still no word yet on whether he'll be able to perform next week.

But his determination to win apparently made a real connection with viewers, who rallied to save him from elimination. (It probably helped that a lot of people remember the "sweep the leg" scene that led to Ralph's iconic crane move that transformed underdog 'Karate Kid' character Daniel LaRusso into an unexpected winner.)

In what was probably the first truly shocking elimination of the season (mainly because it seemed so inevitable that Ralph would be going home), Romeo was given the boot.

Romeo was one of those contestants that waffled back and forth between coming across as having potential to make it to the finale and seeming like he could go at any moment. In fact, he avoided elimination last week despite landing at the bottom of the leaderboard with a panned booty-shakin' routine. The week prior to that, though, he shot to the top with one of the first 10s of the season for his 'Titanic'-themed waltz.

So, he's been wildly inconsistent, to say the least, and his constant plugging of upcoming films and personal projects (from "Go see 'Jumping the Broom!'" to "Follow me on Twitter!") could have finally worn thin with viewers.

Still, it was sad to see him go, as it's at the point in the competition where everyone left deserves to be there -- whether it's because they have serious dance skills (Hines Ward, Chelsea Kane) or lots of heart and determination (Ralph, Kirstie Alley).

Next week it's do-or-die when it comes to making the finals, as each contestant will have to perform three routines. It could be a very tall order for Ralph if the ruptured cyst behind his knee hasn't healed. It could also be a rough week for the often-distracted Kirstie, who has had more than her share of fumbles and missteps over the course of the season.

That said, there's probably only room for one aging '80s icon in the finals. Barring anything seriously unexpected, Hines and Chelsea are shoo-ins for the final three, leaving just one spot open for the two remaining fan favorites. So, next week's performances will no doubt mostly focus on whether it'll be Kirstie or Ralph who makes it to the end. Honestly, it's a toss up, and will probably come down to which one cracks (or soars) under the pressure.

Who do you think will wind up in the final three? Take our poll below and sound off with a comment ...

'Dancing With the Stars' airs Mondays at 8PM ET and Tuesdays at 9PM ET on ABC.

I am not a fan of Ralph. However Mondays dances from him weren't all that bad. There were two other dances that I was bored with. The judges made unnecessarily nasty comments of Ralph's dances. Yet the two top scorers last night had mistakes that even I easily noticed in their routines and they got very high scores and great praise. I watched tonight to see if Ralph would say anything and he did. He thanked everyone personally a long list. the hosts the crew, the musicians I even thought he was going to thank the coca-cola vending machine salesman. I thought it was perfect how he didn't thank the judges for being such jerks. Now that's class. Finally I am left feeling good after the show.

The first hour of DWTS last night was fantastic! I loved seeing the professionals dance. Great show. I hope next year Derek Hough will return to DWTS. I think he is a fantastic dancer and choreopgrapher. I miss seeing him this year. DWTS is one of the best programs on TV.

My opinion is that they are all there to do a job that ABC hired them to do. There is one star that is "consistent" in that his dances are so incredibly "non-entertaining" that it embarresses me to watch, so I leave until his dance is over. Truly sorry for all you Hines' supporters, but he is not worthy of the 10's. My personal opinion is that with this car thing last week, that gave him publicity; second he NEVER has the tough choreography that they throw at Chelsea, Ralph, Kirstie and Romeo (prior to his departure) (watch prior videos). Chelsea's upper scores are justifiable. Hines are not. I am a professional dancer and have to say that Hines is the MOST DRAB dancer on the show. He smiles a lot, and I think that is cute and he seems to be a nice guy. If everyone watchs clips on his dances and COMPARE to the other dancers, you'll definately see what I mean. I think because the judges give him those scores, that tends to "influence" the viewers. For instance, his jive last week. If you review his dance (slow down the video) and compare his kicks, his feet and his rhythm to Kyms....totally off. Furthermore, he was really struggling just to keep up, and with his reaction, Hines himself knew he did a bad job. But you must give him credit. My assessment is that ONLY because the judges like him, they give him PERSONAL SCORES, and fail time after time to give him PROFESSIONAL SCORES. I think they might even feel sorry for him, who knows. As a professional, that is disturbing. Chelsea beats him out big time with Ralph a close second. Carrie Ann is smitten with him for her own reasons, which is not professional. As I said, I am a professional in this profession, and my PROFESSIONAL opinion is that Chelse and Ralph have been most consistent with their tenacity, fierce competitiveness, and TOUGH, TOUGH routines. My PERSONAL opinion is that I think they are all wonderful, I thank them for entertaining us, and I like them all as individuals! My PERSONAL VOTE will go to Ralph, Chelsea and Kirstie in that order. My PROFESSIONAL VOTE goes to Ralph and Chelsea. (I sure used the term "PROFESSIONAL" a lot huh? Sorry, but I felt I needed to make my point across. Thank you!

I was glad to see Romeo go. Just another young black kid who thinks his stuff doesn't stink and who has an overinflated ego. Tomorrow no one will remember his name. I think the final 4 are in for a tough battle for the win. Although Chelsea is truly the best dance, I am kind of sick of watching Mark Ballas whine and I don't want him to win yet another time. Let someone else who has never won(Karina, Maks) finally win the competition. They deserve it just as much as the other pros. Also, lets get Edyta back!!!
