Chris Colfer Downplays Being Named One of Time's Most Influential People (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted May 13th 2011 11:30AM
On 'Live With Regis and Kelly' (weekdays, syndicated), Chris Colfer of 'Glee' downplayed being named one of Time Magazine's most influential people in the world. Colfer said he recently attended a gala held by the magazine and found himself in company much more deserving of the honor.

"I still don't know what I was doing there," Colfer said self-effacingly.

"That night was crazy because I was sitting at a table with so many people that were just so much more interesting than I was, who, like, were ruling countries," he said. "I was sitting next to the man who started the Egyptian revolution on his blog. I was like, 'I tweeted about Chewbacca today.'"

So many horrible, horrible people here. You act like he killed your dog. Just because you don't like Glee doesn't mean you should dislike this guy. Grow up.

I've got nothing against him. I think he is a cool person. If the writers on the Glee show want to use him to create shock value---sorry! There is no more shock in showing people being gay. I guess next week they will be writing in an anger-filled episode to create some sort of drama to keep things going. EVERYONE---Gay or not goes through acceptance of themselves and has to stand up to others and bullies along the way. In this day and age, every star will come out with some revalation of how this or that happened to them-- and how they were the victim. Who isn't--we've all been victims. If only the writers could get their hands on our stories--we would be famous, too !

Time Magazine needs to get out more. This guy is an ACTOR. To say an actor is influential is like saying an athlete can cure cancer. Neither makes sense.

So, because you haven't heard of someone, or know what he/she has done to be on the list, it must mean that they do not deserve to be on there. How ridiculous. How many of us can look at the Times most influential 100 list and say that we know every person and what each of them has done to be on there. People affect different parts of society and just because they have not started a revolution in a loud and in-your-face way, does not mean that they have had no effect. Chris Colfer HAS started a revolution, not just in the LGBT community, but beyond. He has brought many concerns to the fore, especially the extremely worrying rise of teenage suicides brought about by an uncontrolled bullying in the schools today. He is having a phenomenal affect on the younger generation, who are learning through his portrayal of his character, 'Kurt', in Glee, that you should not have to hide who you truly are and that being different is a positive rather than a negative thing. His character also reaches out to the gay community, as he plays an openly Gay character, who refuses to hide away in a closet, or apologise for being born gay. The 20 year old actor has to deal with a great deal of' 'Hate' which is directed at him from many homophobic elements, as well as religious zealots, who think that being Gay is a 'Choice' that people make rather than a process that occurs naturally in the development of a foetus in the womb and is to do with chromosomes. ITMOST DEFINITELY IS NOT A CHOICE ONE MAKES. Chris deals with all of this in a dignified, gentlemanly and unassuming way and this is another reason why his influence is felt so strongly. He was bullied a great deal in his own High school mainly because his voice didn't break at puberty and it remained high-pitched, but he wasn't one that would sit by quietly and just bow down under the abuse. He fought back. He may have come across as obnoxious and temperamental at times at school, but this was his way of reacting and trying to deal with the overwhelming mental abuse he experienced every day. He was an unhappy, lonely child dealing with a lot of pain and anguish, brought about by people who felt that they had the right to ridicule and mentally torture a child who was different to the 'Norm". As he has matured and has moved away from that negative environment into a positive one, he has blossomed into this wonderful young man and is now being seen as a positive role-model of someone who never gave up and who remained true to who he is. That is a wonderful and influential message to give to young people (no matter what their sexual orientation) and when he won the Golden Globe for his extremely powerful and talented performance in Glee, he dedicated it to all the kids that the show represents. To those kids who are told as he was, that they cannot be who they are or have what they want because of who they are, Chris' message is YES YOU CAN!!! So, yes, Chris is influential. He won the votes!!!
