Soap News: Matthew Ashford Returning to 'Days,' 'General Hospital' Gets New Head Writer & More
'Days of Our Lives' is bring back one its most popular stars to the show: Actor Matthew Ashford will return to 'Days' to play Jack Deveraux.Jack, a character who has been on and off 'Days' for more than two decades, will be interacting with his wife, Jennifer ... if she hasn't divorced him by the time he reaches Salem.
Ashford shared the news on his Facebook page, posting this note: "I wish to make an announcement. I am happy to report that I will be returning to NBC's 'Days of Our Lives' as the character of Jack Deveraux sometime later this month. [I] do not know any real specifics but look forward to this opportunity to play Jack and work with old and new friends."
During recent episodes, Jennifer (Melissa Reeves) has been falling in love with Dr. Daniel Jonas. Jennifer came home without her husband. Jack, an intrepid reporter, was on an Australian "walkabout" and hadn't been in touch with Jennifer or their children for months.
Jack was a no-show during some pretty big moments in Jennifer's life, like the time she had her heart harvested when she tried to stop a black market organ-donor ring. He didn't even drop an email to Jennifer. With that said, he should have a lot of explaining to do when he finally shows up on Jennifer's doorstep in late June or early July.
New Head Writer for 'General Hospital'
After 15 years (on and off), head writer Bob Guza has been replaced on 'General Hospital' by Garin Wolf, effective immediately. Wolf, who'd previously taken over the reins of the soap during the Writer's Strike, is a two-time Daytime Emmy winner for his work.
ABC Daytime head, Brian Frons, issued a press release about the appointment. "Garin is a talented writer and storyteller who has been a part of the 'General Hospital' family for nearly 15 years. His in-depth knowledge and adoration for the show's legacy will help make a smooth transition and an immediate impact on story," Frons said in a statement.
"I'm sure he will succeed in taking 'General Hospital' to new heights as he develops characters and storylines that will engage and thrill our viewers."
Hopefully, Wolf will have plenty of time to place his stamp on 'GH' ... and that rumors of Frons' canceling the soap in favor of a Katie Couric talk show (or anything else) will be just that -- rumors.
Towers ReturnThere's trouble heading to Port Charles. Actress Constance Towers is reprising her role as Helena Cassadine on 'General Hospital.'
Towers has played the evil matriarch of the Cassadine clan for more than 10 years, having inherited the role from Elizabeth Taylor.
Helena's diabolical return will be tied in to Aiden's paternity. The character had previously arranged for Liz to believe that Nikolas was the baby's father, not the real dad, Lucky. Recently, Liz was compelled to check on Aiden's DNA and discovered the truth.
Towers is set to appear the week of June 27. Her arrival may or may not be connected with actor Tyler Christopher's exit. Christopher, as Helena's grandson Nikolas, is wrapping his tenure on the show at the end of this week. You can bet that Helena's visit will definitely include Luke, her favorite adversary of all time.
Lucci Spills the Beans
While promoting her new book, a personal memoir called 'All My Life,' Susan Lucci revealed that the last airdate for 'All My Children' will be Friday, September 23.
Lucci, who began her dual role as Erica and Jane this week, explained that the challenge of the storyline has her enthusiastic about the show, even in light of the upcoming cancellation. Lucci even compared the twin tale to a classic Bette Davis movie!
"As far as the doppelganger storyline, it is not an evil twin at all," she told TVGuide.ca. "This is a very contemporary story of identify theft and what you can do in modern times. It's like 'All About Eve.' This woman [Jane] does not just want Erica Kane's credit cards, she wants those too. But she wants her life ... the glamor, the glitz, the red carpet, and the men."
