'American Idol': Scotty vs. Lauren Finale Showdown Preview (Spoilers)

by Hilary Rothing, posted May 23rd 2011 2:30PM
It's safe to say we all know a few things are guaranteed to go down at this season's all-country finale. No matter who wins, J.Lo will cry, Lauren will cry, Lauren's mom will cry (and change hairdos at least twice in the two-hour show), James Durbin will set something on fire and Casey Abrams and/or Haley Reinhart will get their growl on.

As for the rest of the show, we've got some info on what the producers and the 'Idols' have in store for the season 10 send-off, including a performance from one of the biggest rock bands of all time and some hints on what we'll be hearing from two of this season's Top 3 on Wednesday night.

- Scotty is singing first. After winning the coin toss, the southern gentleman still let Lauren have her pick and the Georgia teen chose to go second. (Hollywood Reporter)

- Fifteen former 'Idols' will be on hand outside the Nokia theater on Tuesday, as part of the AT&T 'Idol' Celebration. Damn, they could at least let them in the place! Five of the fifteen will perform, including Kimberly Caldwell, Diana DeGarmo, Jason Castro, Blake Lewis and Bo Bice. Elliot Yamin, Ace Young, Tim Urban, Didi Bemani, Scott MacIntyre, Paige Miles, Michael Sarver, Andrew Garcia, Michael Johns and Nikki McKibbin will also be on on the scene to meet and greet fans. (Atlanta Journal Constitution)

- David Cook will perform season 10 send-off song, "Don't You (Forget About me)" on Wednesday. He'll also be joining this season's Top 13 among others for Simon Fuller's Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony today. (Hollywood Reporter)

- U2 will be performing on Wednesday's finale. The band will likely perform songs from "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark," and be joined onstage by the stars of the show. (MJs Big Blog)

- Haley Reinhart will sing an original song on the finale. According to Haley's parents, who FOX apparently hasn't told to hush up already, their daughter may release the original tune she'll perform on Wednesday. If the song's a hit, an album will follow. Haley shot down two songs before making her choice. (MJs Big Blog)

- Scotty recently recorded a song written by Tim Nichols, who wrote "Live Like You Were Dying," the titular track from Tim McGraw's 8th studio album. He may perform the single on the finale. (AI Now)

- Remember, the performance show is on Tuesday, this week from 8-9PM ET. Scotty and Lauren will each perform three songs. One will be a personal favorite from the season (Pray Scotty doesn't beat the dead horse that is "Your Man," one more time), the second is Simon Fuller's choice and the third is the song the 'Idol' would record for their first single, should they win. In Scotty' case, we already know it's probably the Tim Nichols' tune.

- Steven Tyler is expected to perform on Wednesday, will he make good on his promise to share the stage with James Durbin?

That's it, Idol fans! What do you think about how the finale's shaping up? Who's really "in it to win it, southern belle, Lauren Alaina or "Your Man" Scotty McCreery? Let us know in the comments and stay tuned for more 'Idol' coverage as we gear up for the big showdown!

'American Idol' airs this Tuesday and Wednesday at 8PM ET on FOX.

Either Scotty or Lauren can win in my book. Both are great and will be super country singers soon. Both are nice clean cut young folks who set a positive example for young people.

You mean singers are supposed to be role models for people they don't even know?

Personally, I wouldn't want my child to be offensive/fake/narrow-minded like Scotty or childish/dumb like Lauren. Sorry.

My Vote is for Scotty McCreery to win, mature for his age, will be able to handle the pressure of the music industry, as he's grounded and no doubt, with his talent, he will be a great Country performer. Lauren Alaina runner up, as she's young, emotional and talented! Either way, winner/runner-up, each will have success in the business, if they work to make this happen and that each have a strong and loyal fan base, that will support them in all their endeavors!
Best Wishes to all the contestants for much future success!

if Simon was still on AI,
considering his views on country music
it's likely neither Scotty or Lauren would be in the Final,

but either way …

after 10 years American Idol remains:

a Karaoke of itself …

a TV show possessed with a shallow 1 dimensional vision of music culture.

that is a media driven self-profiting farcical comedia noir
of media exploitation, humiliation and self-glorification.

with a panel of “judges” who often predetermine (and are coached),
as to what to say and when to say it.

(and why are they called “judges”, when the only thing they stand for is their commentary?)

with a forum occupied by a frenzy of venomous creepies
thriving on expanding the humiliation American Idol
cant do itself on live television.

and armed with a tactical, profiting fraudulent power dialer voting system scheme,
unlike anything Orwell or Kafka wrote about.

all neatly disguised and packaged ,
and simply called … “a singing competition”.

which one poster in AI forums who shall remain nameless,
went so far declaring American Idol as a “perfect example of democracy”.

which should make the Producers of AI and Fox News happy:
that the media as a tool for brainwashing is alive and well in America.

so much for teaching young people citizenship, and what it is to be an American …

let alone expanding ones musical horizons and the advancement of music.

its not American Idol that needs to be saved … its most of the people watching it !

.

I have no intention of watching a boring and predictable finale on Tue. nite. I'll probably watch The Voice instead. However, I will catch the results show on Wed. nite.

Lauren is by far the best of the two. No doubt she should win. All Scotty does is stand there, not hit any notes or hold them, and he does that stupid thing with his eyebrows. Lauren goes up there and is never off pitch, looks amazing, and sings her heart out. Ik Scotty will win because all the 12 year old girls will b up voting for him, but Lauren should be the one who is going to won season 10.

What are you talking about? Lauren sang every one of her songs last week off-key. She even missed the key change in her second song. If you don't know what you're talking about then don't say anythikng because it really makes you look stupid.

^ Well, we already know you are, if you think Scotty is a good singer in any sense of the word.

Since the three most talented contestants are gone now, I will not be watching this week. If the rules for eliminating people don't change to either America voting for who to eliminate or to the judges choosing one of the bottom three for elimination without knowing what order they ranked in, I will not be watching next year either. The current system just doesn't work.

Garner grit has the stage presence of a beached Flounder..and that geeky crap he does with the mike...what is that all about....

McCreedy voices are a dime a dozen in Nashville..and add to that ZERO stage presence.....he soon be forgotten !

I agree, he'll most likely win. Not that he deserves to.
