Edward James Olmos Joins 'Dexter' Cast

by Maureen Ryan, posted May 24th 2011 4:30PM
Battle stations: Edward James Olmos of 'Battlestar Galactica' will have a major role in the new season of 'Dexter.'

Olmos, who was last seen on the small screen playing William Adama on 'Battlestar Galactica,' will play a "brilliant, charismatic professor of religious studies," according to a release from Showtime.

Other guest stars for the sixth season of the Showtime serial-killer drama include Colin Hanks, who'll play an expert on religious artifacts, and Mos (formerly Mos Def), a former prisoner who's found religion.

Hmmm, there's a common thread with these characters - is Dexter joining a monastery?

Speaking of 'Battlestar Galactica' alumni, you may have heard that Mary McDonnell, who played 'BSG's' Laura Roslin, will star in the 'Closer' spinoff 'Major Crimes' in 2012.

Jamie Bambier, who played Lee "Apollo" Adama, will return to the small screen sooner than that: He's one of the stars of "Outcasts," a drama that premieres on BBC America June 18 (and if you've never seen Olmos, McDonnell or Bamber in 'BSG,' that program will be rerun on BBC America beginning June 11.

YES EDWARD JAMES OLMOS WOULD DO A VERY GOOD JOB. I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED ESAI MORALES. HE WAS AN EXCELELANT IN NYPD BLUE. I CAN REALLY SEE HIM IN THIS ROLE. THANK YOU

We had Outcasts in the UK a few months ago. Let me warn you, my American Cousins, that you'd be better off saving that bit of your life and not watching it. It was a decent cast and highish production values destroyed by a below-average script and non-sensical storyline.

Best missed - REALLY...

EJO will be a great fit for Dexter. Very glad to see him returning to my TV and on a show that I love. Thanks for sharing the good news!

Speaking of Jamie Bambier, did L&OUK not make if past the first season. The run on BBC America seems to be reruns of reruns of the first season.

I would suggest not bothering with Outcasts. It started out strongly with a lot of good possibilities then quickly floundered. In its eight episode run it made a few startlingly bad and just plain incomprehensible reveals at the end, while plotlines from the beginning of the series were left hanging. It got poor ratings, got murdered by critics, and was summarily cancelled.
