Scotty McCreery on Winning 'American Idol,' Lauren Alaina and Ryan Seacrest's Odd 'Tradition'
Your 'American Idol' season 10 winner, Scotty McCreery took some time out of the post-finale whirlwind of appearances and interviews, this afternoon, to talk to the press in the usual morning-after conference call."This is pretty wild, I gotta say. I mean it's a whole lot more than I bargained for coming into it. I never would have expected it but I'm handling it well. It's what I asked for and this is my new life. It's a really crazy ride, so far," said Scotty at outset of the call.
But if anyone can handle the life changing transformation that winning 'American Idol' brings, it's McCreery. The cool as a cucumber seventeen-year-old exuded confidence this season on the 'Idol' stage. Asked if he ever doubted his standing with America, however, Scotty was humble, as expected from the budding southern gentleman, heaping praise on his toughest competition, Lauren Alaina."Lauren Alaina, she's something else. She sings like a bird and she's just an amazing young lady. But every week I heard people say the frontrunner stuff and the favorite, but to me it never crossed my mind because everybody from the Top 40 down was just so talented. It was such an amazing ride...I've always had confidence in myself but it was weird, the nerves for this show, it's something else," admitted the season 10 winner.
Speaking of Lauren, Scotty fielded the question of a romance with his Top 2 competitor. It's one the pair have been getting since Lauren planted one on him, last night.
"We've been getting that question a lot today. Me and her, it's more like the brother sister thing. She told me before the show yesterday, she was gonna do that, kinda like a joke, so she did. She's a character. She's lovely but we're really close friends. I met her on day one of Hollywood week and we were schoolmates through this whole experience, but yea, it's more of a brother sister thing between me and her."
So what's next for best of friends, Scotty and Lauren? A trip to Nashville seems like the natural progression for these two country singers.
"I was talking to Simon Fuller last night and I think we're gonna try and get me and Lauren out there to FanFest this year. They're trying work out the specifics right now about where we're gonna be playing and the booth signings, maybe playing at the Grand Ole Opry. They're working all this out as we speak but we're gonna be down there for sure, I think."
On what's ahead as far as releasing original music, Scotty revealed that he's got two singles in the bag, but can't reveal the title of the second song, just yet.
"We recorded two (singles) this week we weren't sure which one we were gonna do and 'Love You This Big' turned out be the one that we did. But the other one, I'm really excited about the other one, too. I think it's gonna be a great album. I've got a mix of good songs and that's what it's all about after the show is getting good songs because fans got me to where I am now so it's my job to get them the music they wanna hear and have good songs. But hopefully me and Lauren Alaina get to do a duet at sometime. I'm not sure about the first album but hopefully sometime soon."
During the call, Scotty learned that "Love You This Big" was at number one on the iTunes singles chart. The teen sounded beside himself as he shared the news with his mother, who was next to him during the call. It seems Scotty's tried and true dedicated to country music is already paying off. And as far he was concerned, there were no plans to waver from his country roots during his 'Idol' run.
"Everybody had them own niche, Casey would sing his jazzy kinda rocker, growly music, Jacob sang his gospel music, James sang his rock music and I sang my country music. We all kinda had that same niche. We sang different songs but we all had that genre that we liked to stay in. Country music is me. It's what I grew up with and it's what I do. So I didn't have intentions of changing it. If it got me this far why change it?"
Staying true to himself has indeed paid off for Scotty. But one thing that didn't make much sense during his time on 'Idol' was Ryan Seacrest's insistence on calling him "Scotty the Body." What the heck was up with that?
"He told me early on it's kind of like a tradition. I think he's done it with all the "Scotts," like Scott MacIntryre and there was another guy on named "Scott" I think. But it was more like a joke. I've been eating too many cookies on the show, anyway. I'm not as toned as I was during my baseball days."
Now that he's won 'American Idol,' it looks like Scotty can easily shake the unfortunate nickname. For more on last night's finale, check out our full recap and the latest edition of AOL TV's 'American Idol' talk show, 'Something Pitchy.'
