Forest Whitaker, 'The National Memorial Day Concert'Memorial Day is a holiday to honor the men and women of our armed forces, and those who sacrifice so much for our country and our freedoms. At 'The National Memorial Day Concert' (Sun., 8PM ET on PBS), Forest Whitaker helped to bring home how personal each of those veteran's stories are, by relating one to us.

Specialist Michael Martin suffered injuries when his "40,000 pound monster vehicle" somersaulted after hitting an IED.

"Right away, I noticed things weren't the same. The simplest things like putting on a seatbelt frustrated me. My balance was bad. My speech was bad, my short-term memory, it was gone," Whitaker related on behalf of Martin.

But with everything he's lost, Martin is a story of hope and perseverance. "I know I'm gonna never be back to 100 percent but I'm not gonna quit on my kids or Tiffany, my wife," he said. And more significantly, with all the things he struggles to remember, "I never forget my kids."

The event also honored the 70th anniversary of Pearl Harbor, and a 10-year commemoration of 9/11. It was a star-studded event, but it wasn't the stars who were the most in the spotlight at this annual concert, it was the men and women who have served, and those who continue to serve, our country.
