'Dan for Mayor' Star Fred Ewanuick Talks Season Two, Faux Politics and Getting Noticed

by Annette Bourdeau, posted Jun 2nd 2011 4:30PM
What happens when some guy runs for mayor on a whim and actually wins? That's what Season 2 of 'Dan for Mayor' will explore, when average dude Dan finds himself running Wessex. Naturally, newbie Dan runs into plenty of amusing challenges, including a scandal dubbed 'Speedoo-gate' and a tough lesson about talking to the media 'off-the-record.' He also has some fun, too, like with a little event called Porktoberfest.

Season 1 left off with Dan winning the mayoral race by default, and girlfriend Claire (Mary Ashton, 'Heartland') moving to Vancouver. We caught up with 'Dan' star Fred Ewaniuck ('Corner Gas') to get the scoop on Season 2. He's coy about the details, but he does confirm that Claire still very much figures into the picture, despite how things left off. Ooooooh!

AOL TV: Now that Dan is mayor, is he taking his duties seriously?
Fred Ewanuick: He is! Nobody else is taking his duties seriously, but he is. [Laughs] That's the one thing I like. The writer guys –- Kevin White, Mark Farrell and Paul Mather –- they could have just done the 'dumb mayor,' where he doesn't know what's going on all the time. They chose to make him proactive, to try to do the right thing. Of course he gets himself into some trouble trying to do that and he has to get himself out of it.

What are some of his biggest challenges as mayor?
Oh, there's always stuff that comes up. In one episode, the crazy police chief wants to get rid of the RCMP horses and replace them with Speedoos (they're kind of like Segways). So Dan's like no, that's a horrible idea! He's coming up against that type of stuff. And he fights another mayor who starts dumping garbage on their land.

Does his lack of experience help him in any way?
Well it keeps him honest. [Laughs] Other than that I don't think it helps, it gets in the way. He's trying to do the right thing but he ends up inevitably getting himself in trouble.

Who's back from Season 1?
Alan Duffy (Laurie Murdoch, 'Civic Duty') is now Dan's chief of staff. Dan's best friend Jeff (Paul Bates, 'Mooseport') now owns Fern's, and Fern works for him. And I can't really say what Claire is doing, but Mike (Benjamin Ayres, 'The Vampire Diaries) is still around causing trouble for Dan. Mike is kind of still out to get Dan, which sets up for some pretty funny stuff.

At the end of Season 1 Mike had bought Fern's, is that right?
When we leave at the end of Season 1, Mike's bought Fern's, fired Dan, and then Dan quit anyway because he was going to move to Vancouver with Claire, but then Dan becomes mayor and so we don't know what's going on with Dan and Claire. So we find that out in the first episode. And we also learn where Mike is in all that. He's still trying to get Dan, though he pretends he's his buddy.

So Mike and Dan are like frenemies?
Frenemies! [Laughs] That's a good term. Yeah, they're totally frenemies!

You mentioned you can't say much about Claire. Can you tell us if she's going to figure into Season 2 at all? Will we see any of her life in Vancouver?
She definitely figures into Season 2. Absolutely she does. I just don't want to give too much away. The first episode is kind of nice. It's not a huge surprise or anything, but if I say too much I give away what happens in the first episode. It's a little thing, don't make a big deal out of it. It's just cute ... I mean, it's a huge deal, you've got to tune in!! Tell all of your friends and family! [Laughs]

Are people starting to recognize you more as that guy from 'Dan for Mayor' as opposed to that guy from 'Corner Gas'?
I'd say it's about 50-50 now. In Vancouver I get recognized more for 'Dan for Mayor' than I do for 'Corner Gas.' I don't know if it's the hat factor. I don't wear a hat on 'Dan,' and in real-life I walk around without a hat. So maybe I should start wearing a hat again, I don't know!

Do they say anything about 'Dan for Mayor'?
I've heard some positive things. People say they like it, good work, that kind of stuff. People are pretty polite, they don't come up and say 'You suck' or anything like that. I would imagine those people just don't bother saying anything. Cuz that'd be kind of rude, huh, to say 'Hey, you're on TV right? You're horrible!' Then what am I supposed to say? Yeah, thanks for telling me! [Laughs]

Season 2 of 'Dan for Mayor' premieres on CTV Sunday, June 5 at 7:30PM ET.
