'Switched at Birth' Stars Lea Thompson and Katie Leclerc Preview Their New Show

Lea Thompson, Katie Leclerc, Switched at BirthBeing switched at birth isn't exactly an experience many people can relate to.

But Lea Thompson, star of ABC Family's new series 'Switched at Birth' (premieres Mon., June 6 at 9PM), assures AOL TV there is plenty in the series, about two teenage girls who discover they were accidentally brought home from the hospital by the wrong families, that will feel familiar to viewers.

"A lot of families have adoptive children, egg donors -- it's all about nature versus nurture, and whether you love someone just because they're your blood or whether you love someone because of the experiences you had with them," she says. "I think everybody can relate to that. I certainly can. For my character, I think she's just like 'Oh my gosh, great! There's more people in my family that I can love!'"

Thompson plays Kathryn Kennish, the reserved matriarch of the well-off Kennish family, who raised moody, dark-haired Bay (Vanessa Marano) but is actually the birth mother of Daphne Vasquez, a fair, blond-haired girl raised by her artistic single Latina mom.

"Daphne is a normal high school girl, she's got the same problems any high school girl would have -- boyfriends, grades, she plays basketball," says Katie Leclerc, who plays Daphne.

One thing separates Daphne from other girls her age -- she's deaf. "One of the beautiful things about the show is that the disability and the hearing loss is always sort of secondary to the fact that she is a functioning, healthy human being," Leclerc says.

Interestingly, Leclerc herself has experience with hearing loss -- she suffers from Meniere's Disease, an inner ear disorder that can affect hearing and balance, and is fluent in American Sign Language.

Since this is an ABC Family show, don't fret -- there are love interests in store for both daughters. "ABC Family does an amazing job of casting beautiful boys to look at," Leclerc laughs.

Like the moms. Lea Thompson did Red Dawn & the Back to the Future movies. Think how they portray the hearing loss will make this show stand out over others that may try this storyline.

I posed the same question to my readers yesterday (http://www.thetalkingbox.com/2011/06/random-question-gonna-watch-switched-at.html). I'm looking forward to the new show, and I think it'll be pretty interesting.
