5 Reasons to Check Out 'Misfits' on Hulu

by Chris Harnick, posted Jun 15th 2011 4:15PM
Fans of good TV take note! 'Misfits' is coming to Hulu. Why does this matter to you? Because you need to see this show before some American network buys it and puts its own (probably terrible) spin on it. Nothing says great TV like hormonal, smart alec teenagers with super abilities, and that's the premise behind the BAFTA award-winning UK series.

Suddenly your summer got much more exciting.

The series, about five troubled youths who get superpowers after a strange storm, is a huge hit in Europe. The show has slowly seeped its way across the Atlantic, creating a sizable fan following on social media platforms, especially Tumblr (check out AOL TV's Tumblr here!). For the uninitiated, though, audiences will be able to experience 'Misfits' from the beginning on Hulu starting June 20.

Along with 'Misfits,' Hulu.com and Hulu Plus will offer Brit hits 'Whites' and 'The Booth at the End' later this summer.

So, why should you devote valuable hours of your summer relaxation to 'Misfits'?

It's really good.
I know, that's probably obvious given that I'm writing this article, but it really is good! The season-long stories are paced nicely, the acting is tops and the writing is sharp. A healthy mix of comedy and drama will make the weeklong wait for new episodes excruciating for new viewers. Warning, this show is addicting.

It's funny.
OK, funny is a bit of an understatement because the show is wildly entertaining. Yeah, there's drama -- it's a supernatural show -- but from Nathan's wisecracking and vulgar jokes to the socially awkward tendencies of Simon, you'll be hard-pressed not to laugh.

Robert Sheehan.
He's brash, incredibly rude and doesn't apologize for it. If you love smart jerks, Sheehan's Nathan will have you weak in the knees. His dynamic with the rest of the cast is something unparalleled on American TV, especially his chemistry with Socha. Just try not to get too attached -- he's rumored to be leaving the series in Season 3.

It's got flavor.
Sure, the whole "regular people with special abilities" thing has been done time and time again, but 'Misfits' makes it feel original. The stories are refreshing, especially when compared to botched superhero shows like 'No Ordinary Family.' The show takes risks, changing the status quo and not apologizing for it.

Lauren Socha.
Socha's character, Kelly, turns into the emotional center of the series. It's a hard task to pull off, but the actress does it with ease. She even beat out Gillian Anderson for a BAFTA.

Now, go forth and watch. And when you get to Season 2 and meet the hooded figure, we can have a whole different conversation about the series.
