'Expedition Impossible': Watch the First 15 Minutes of ABC's New Reality Competition

by Jean Bentley, posted Jun 17th 2011 4:20PM
Expedition Impossible'Expedition Impossible,' Mark Burnett's latest reality show, follows teams racing against each other as they trek through Morocco.

ABC posted 15 minutes of the premiere online today, and the show seems kind of like 'The Amazing Race' meets an Iron Man challenge during a desert season of 'Survivor.' Which is to say it looks interesting, though not entirely original.

There are plenty of reality TV tropes to be found -- there's the redneck team, the spicy latina team, the ex-NFL players who talk exclusively in football metaphors, the guy overcoming adversity, the excruciatingly long pauses before critical moments -- but all in all, it looks like a fun show for the summer. That said, if it were ever up against 'TAR,' Phil Keoghan would win every time.

At the very least, if the Middle Eastern scenery in the second 'Sex and the City' movie didn't make you want to visit Morocco already (or maybe Mariah Carey's newborn son, Moroccan), the breathtakingly gorgeous sweeping shots of the country in 'Expedition Impossible' will have you jumping online to check plane ticket prices as soon as the episode's over.

Tell us: Will you watch the 'Expedition Impossible' premiere next week? Did you also feel really awkward when that lady got really excited about beating her blind competitor?

This does remind me a lot of Eco-Challenge. The problem with Eco-Challenge was the whole 300 mile race being done without rest breaks. It tended to discourage all but the most fit (and groups of Playboy Playmates!) from participating. Doing this show with, apparently, breaks between stages makes it more open to people you might not have seen in the original Eco-Challenge. I just hope that people give it a chance. ABC is putting a lot of effort into summer programming, and they should reap at least some rewards for it.

An Ironman Amazing Race plus Survivor and NBC's Lost (no relation of JJ Abrams).
The clip couldn't be any more TAR-ish if they tried though. From driving teams to their startling line, to Dave Salmoni doing his worst Phil Keoghan (or really, worst Allan Wu of The Amazing Race Asia) impression to pointing off into the distance to their next clues... checkpoints instead of Pit Stops, "Never Give Up" instead of "The world is waiting"

Resurrecting Eco-Challenge might have been more interesting.

It looks pretty interesting. Then again, I love 'The Amazing Race'.
