James Sets a Record for Chris Powell on 'Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Jun 21st 2011 2:14AM
James, 'Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition'The transformations reached epic proportions this week on 'Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition' (Mon., 10PM ET on ABC). James came onto the program at 651 lbs, but at one time he'd topped the scales north of 700 lbs.

With the help of trainer Chris Powell, he not only turned his life around, he set a record for transformations under Powell's tutelage when he dropped an astonishing 313 lbs in a single year.

"I'm glad I'm able to share this story with the world," he told the assembled crowd of his family, friends and supporters. "'Cause I remember how lost I felt when I was over 700 pounds. And just knowing that maybe somebody out there is going to have some form of inspiration from what I was able to accomplish."

It's great that there are opportunities like this show for people in James's situation, as he would clearly be too large and out of shape for most weight loss competition programs. Granted, you don't need a television show to lose weight but, as James said, seeing someone else achieving what you believe to be impossible in your own life can go a long way toward putting people on the right path.

If the show gets picked up for another season, maybe additional trainers could come on board so they could tackle more than one case at a time. It could be a better vehicle for Jillian Michaels than 'Losing It' turned out to be, and she could still move in with people.

Extreme weight loss, however, comes with risks.

Magnificent transformation! However, the sad reality is that only around 3-5% of weight losers will have maintained this loss after 2-4 years. It may be politically incorrect here where intense workout programs lead to a wonderful weight loss, but really just about the only way to maintain weight loss is through weight loss surgery. The Duodenal Switch has been found in multiple replicated studies to be the most successful of all surgeries. If anyone reading this is living with the rugged side-effects of morbid, or super-morbid obesity, research this life saving procedure. Try these sites for further info: duodenalswitch.com and obesityhelp.com . It's harder to get insurance for this and it's more complex than the more common gastric bypass, but it's so worth it. It saved my life.

Yes Good Job Man, Here's a few thoughts....he's not a very demonstrative person, he stuck out his hand to shake his own grandmothers .
He never acknowledged or thanked Chris at the end.
I hope he continues to lose and make great choices, like AA, you have to change your playmates and playgrounds ( buffets, Hardees, Bojangles, KFC , McD etc )
I hope Chris and crew offers follow ups with these people.
