Ryan Murphy Talks 'Glee' Season 3, and It Sounds Promising!

by Jean Bentley, posted Jun 22nd 2011 2:15PM
Ryan MurphyTurns out, Ryan Murphy really did hear all of your (our) complaints about 'Glee''s uneven and generally not-so-great second season.

First, after yapping to basically every journalist on the Internet last summer, he stopped revealing every single plot twist and guest star and song selection. As much as I encourage giving scoop, you've got to leave something a surprise when the episodes finally air.

Then he went and hired a full-on writing staff, ensuring (hopefully!) that the third season might be able to maintain some sense of continuity or develop its many characters in multi-episode arcs and recurring storylines!

Now, Murphy is publicly stating that season 3 will not be the guest-star bonanza we've come to know. The 2011-2012 season is pulling a Christina and going back to basics. "We're not going to have any guest stars," Murphy told TVLine. "And we're going to do fewer songs."

There's also going to be just one big tribute episode. Just one. He promises. "It's one I've been working on for two years - it took forever to clear - with a really big artist," he told TVLine.

And that tired "Sue wants to destroy the glee club" storyline? It's over. "We did that, and we did that well. But now it's time for Sue to stop picking on the glee club and time for her to start picking on the country," Murphy told TVLine.

As for how 'The Glee Project' ties in to the show, Murphy revealed to TV Guide that the person who ultimately wins "is the person who she hates the most in the history of the show. ... 'The Glee Project' winner is Sue Sylvester's new archenemy and she is going to destroy their life."

Although Murphy maintained that the current New Directions members will, in fact, graduate at the end of the year, he hasn't ruled out a spinoff. That decision will be made in a few months, he said.

Tell us: Are you as hopeful for the next season of 'Glee' as we are?

@MikeS - have you watched the UK Skins series? (forget the god-awful US version). For the third and then the fifth seasons, they totally replaced the entire main cast, and it worked. Although it did take a while to get accustomed to the new faces each time.

I really don't know how they'd ever replace Lea Michele on Glee, she's the heart and soul of the show (and the best singer by far).

I'm glad he's getting a writing staff to help out with the load, but I'm also glad that he said he doesn't care what the TV critics say. Good thing, too, because they were being overly negative this year. The media loves to hype things and then tear them down.

I bought the hype, being late to the party, and missed Season 1. So Season 2 is my only real reference and I liked it. We have never had a producer with enough guts to change the cast of a popular show so who knows how this will play out. I did think the Sue Sylvester physically manhandling people was over the top but told myself it was just in her mind and never really happened. I am amazed these 30-somethings can pull off high school roles. I like that the other Glee Club members voice what we all think about one singer always getting the lead. Maybe that led to the decision to do less songs. Tuning in just to hear Rachel sing does get repetitive. In the main, I agree the show will go away soon. He has done all he can with this cast and this storyline. If no one buys the new kids, then it is over. I woill be intrigued to see who among them moves on to either other televised shows or even movies. Most of them are telegenic and now have experience.

Here is why the ratings are so awful on the Glee Project: We hated seeing people like Ellis kicked off so early in the series. What a huge mistake! The Glee Project completely contradicts what's great about Glee thematically. A much better format would be a "Battle of the Bands," thing. Choose great talent, assign them to two teams, throw them together to develop teamwork, bonding, leadership and all the other things Glee is about. Let us watch them grow week to week as they work with the mentors and guest mentors and with each other. . We'll all get off on the songs and watching how it's done. The competition should be all between the teams, and leadership within the team. This will show some great real-live human stories, for the writers to be inspired by. Towards the end, begin to narrow it down, winnow out people a few at a time, finally the judges and the audience can vote on the "MVP's" to appear on the show based on what they have observed, & we all will be much more invested in the show.

Sucks the life of the show will only be 3 seasons long..Then what a new class I doubt it will work. At least we were gleeked out for 3yrs.

Boo. The musical numbers are the best part of the show. They should do away with the talking altogether and just give us an hour of music. OK, maybe that's a bit exterme, but really, the show IS the songs.

Watch season 1 again, all of the exciting parts with emotion don't involve music, the number are icing on the cake. S2 had way too much icing.

He addressed by two biggest gripes of S2 I guess Ill tune in again.

You're wrong about that. The most emotion is when the characters and the songs go together. See Menzel's and Michele's "I Dreamed A Dream," the group "Total Eclipse of the Heart," or Chenoweth's and Michele's "Maybe This Time."

This season, the songs were mostly performed separately from the story. That's where ti went wrong. I don't mind the performances, but I would like most of the music to go with the story--like a musical should. Plus, Rachel--who is, like it or not, the heart of show--did get enough focus this season.
