'The Marriage Ref' Is Back With a New Format and Giant Pumpkins (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Jun 27th 2011 5:50AM
'The Marriage Ref' season premiere'The Marriage Ref' (Sun., 10PM ET on NBC) returned with a slightly tweaked format this season. Now, the couples are brought into the studio, and the audience gets to pick which person was the most right and that person will get a billboard in their hometown telling everyone they were right. Oh, and they'll also pocket a cool $25,000.

The most memorable of the three couples was definitely the Johnsons. The wife was frustrated because of her husbands obsession with all things pumpkins, including growing gigantic ones and even naming them.

The celebrities were on his side, though Jerry Seinfeld told him to do something about how ugly they look when they get so big.

"Some of them are pretty and some of them look British, frankly," Mr. Johnson said, jabbing at panelist Ricky Gervais.

In the end, though, despite the fun they had with the Johnsons, it was another couple that took home the prize, with the wife winning bragging rights. The audience agreed with the panelists that Mrs. Wasserman was in the right and that her husband just needs to get over his problem with her mother coming from Thailand and cooking Thai food.

Hopefully, the billboard will still be up in their hometown the next time her mother comes to visit so she can see as well that her daughter was right in this argument. If Mr. Wasserman has such a problem with it, he can just cook himself.

What do you think of these format changes on this season of 'The Marriage Ref'? Did it need to be fixed? If so, did they do enough?

I miss the woman that sat on the sidlines and gave information.
The 25k and billboard ideas make it a different format, and I think it changes the dynamics of the show. Before it was mostly about fun, now it is about the money.
Do not invite that Ricky Gervais back.
