'Law & Order: SVU' Execs Say Mariska Hargitay Will Appear in Every Episode Next Season

Mariska HargitayIt's been a confusing time for fans of 'Law & Order: SVU' over the last few months. First, veteran showrunner Neal Baer stepped down, and then came news of star Christopher Meloni's surprise exit.

After producers hired not one, but two, new actors for lead roles in the wake of Meloni's departure, worried fans have been left to question the fate of Mariska Hargitay and her character, Det. Olivia Benson.

Now producers have acted to reassure fans, telling 'Entertainment Weekly' that the new additions to the cast do not pose a threat to Hargitay, and that she will continue to play a marquee role in the 'Law & Order' franchise when it returns in the fall.

A NBC spokesman said that Hargitay will appear in every episode of the upcoming Season 13 even though Kelly Giddish ('The Chase') and Danny Pino ('Cold Case') have joined the cast.

With all the major players except Meloni returning it sounds like the 'SVU' squad room may be a little crowded.

However, new mom Hargitay has only renewed her contract for one year, and she asked for a lighter work schedule. Producers said they'll be able to accommodate Hargitay's wish to spend more time with her family while continuing to have her appear every week, so it seems likely that we'll see less of Olivia in the second half of the season as she gradually makes room for Giddish's character.

Over the course of 12 seasons Hargitay and Meloni have created one of the top on-screen partnerships, with their characters of Dets Benson and Stabler forming the 'SVU' lynchpin. It's still unclear how Stabler will be written out of the series, but at least fans can rest easy that they'll have time to get used to an 'SVU' without Olivia.

With production on the new season due to get underway soon, it will be interesting to see how the new detectives are introduced. Stay tuned for updates.

'Law & Order: SVU' Season 13 is due to premiere in September, on NBC.

Without Meloni and Hargitay, the show will fall apart. They are the reasons I watched the show. They better do whatever it takes to hold on to Hargitay, because she may be able to save the show without Meloni, but together, they were unstoppable. Sometimes the execs just don't get it.

By the way, I think they should have hired Michael Richards (as Cosmo Kramer) to take over for Stabler.

Without Meloni this cast will implode. They'll want to kill one another. They'll be guest appearances by the entire cast of "Criminal Minds" or "CSI" to see who murdered the cast of Law&Order.

Are you serious? Chris Meloni made that show! Meloni is the one reason I watched the show, without him the show is zero. Pino was a nothing on Cold Case--the lady cop made that show. As for the lady from The Chase, I never heard of her or that show.
I stopped watching LAW and ORDER because of it leftist viewpoint--besides I was getting irritated with the leads.
And now that Meloni is out of SVU-- forget about that show also.

Christopher Meloni has wanted OUT for at least 4 seasons but the lure of more money kept him pulling him into staying. I read an article about 4 years ago, maybe in Parade, in which Meloni moaned and groaned about how he had taken Stabler as far as he could and he wasn't a challenge any more.

Thank goodness Mariska is hanging around for one more season so we can slowly adjust to the new detectives and watch Fin and Munch get more involved. After 12 years it is expected that writers start running out of strong storylines and actors feel the episodes aren't up to par. Law and Order: SVU will go on with the high quality it has always shown and WE the viewers will be there as we always have been.

Kelly Giddish is a good actress and I liked her show "The Chase" but like a lot of good new shows the network didn't give it enough time. I look forward to see her role in Law and Order, SVU
