Nancy Grace's Coverage of the Casey Anthony Trial Posts Record Ratings for HLN

by Catherine Lawson, posted Jul 6th 2011 6:30AM
Nancy GraceNancy Grace's outraged disbelief at the verdicts in the Casey Anthony trial led many to question if her head would, actually, explode on-air. It did not. However, her stunned reaction -- "somewhere out there, the devil is dancing tonight" -- did set the Twitterverse afire.

Grace has been covering the story on her eponymous primetime show since two-year old Caylee Anthony was reported missing in mid-2008.

Her intense, often controversial, scrutiny of the case produced record ratings for CNN's Headline News and may also have influenced the other TV networks' coverage as they acted in the wake of her escalating ratings.

'The Wrap' reports that Grace's single-minded pursuit of the "truth" about Caylee Anthony's death put HLN in second place during June, the 29-year-old channel's best ratings month ever. And it also helped the network challenge Fox News in the coveted adults aged 25-54 demographic during primetime.

The bigger cable news outlets noticed HLN's ratings success, and as the numbers looked better and better for HLN, MSNBC, FNC and even CNN began devoting more and more of their air time to the trial. By the time the verdict was announced Tuesday, almost every major U.S. and foreign media outlet was covering the story.

A cable news producer said that Grace first pushed the story because, as the mother of young children, "she felt a visceral reaction. And because she had that visceral reaction, the producers there said we have got to do this story."

Known for her combative on-air style, Grace set herself up as a crusader for the the dead child, consistently deriding suspect/defendant Casey Anthony as "tot mom."

When the trial started in late May, HLN was mired in a ratings slump, facing a double-digit dip in ratings year-to-year. Grace's passion for the case became the channel's way of ending its slump.

According to 'The Wrap,' as she began devoting more and more time to the trial fellow primetime hosts Dr. Drew Pinsky and Joy Behar were advised to do the same, and HLN even created a 5PM ET show -- 'Special Report' -- to cover the Anthony trial, as well as the upcoming trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, who is being charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson.

As HLN devoted more and more time to the story, its ratings grew -- Grace's in particular, and all of a sudden she found herself competing with the big-hitters like Fox's Bill O'Reilly (not to mention leaving MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell in the dust).

According to Poynter Institute senior faculty member Al Tompkins, "The whole franchise, the entire channel is built around [Grace] at this moment."

Doubtless Grace will be on-hand for Casey Anthony's sentencing on charges of lying to police, which Orange County Chief Judge Belvin Perry Jr. scheduled for 9AM ET Thursday. Anthony faces up to one year in jail per charge.

You people are some very sick individuals out there to bring Nancy's little babies into this. You all should be down right ashamed of yourselves... Leave Nancy's children alone. And as far as her fiancee is concerned you know nothing about that... So speak of what you think you know. Like I said "WHAT YOU THINK YOU KNOW" She has been put through true hell and you have the nerve of speaking of her loss.. SHAME SHAME SHAME on all of you... Judge not for you shall be judged!!!!!!!!!! I'm sure glad I'm not so stupid as some of you or all of you sick people saying things you have NO knowledge of... LEAVE OUR NANCY ALONE.....

I truly believe that Nancy Grace is a very loving caring person. And I love how she tells it the way it truly is without any hold back. No matter what people think or say. You can sit at home and criticize her all you want. However she is the very best at covering any and all the top stories there is; Nancy is on top of the game and you people are just jealous of her, because she is excellent at what she does... Leave our Nancy alone and let her do the job at hand because she is the best as I said earlier in this message. If you don't like the truth then don't watch. However do NOT throw rocks when you live in a glass house!!!!! Nancy your my number one on bringing the real truth to us out here that can't be there. I want to personally thank you for this... I love the twins pics. Keep it coming our way PLEASE! thanks again. Sincerely, T.Bear Radcliff, Kentucky

It is understandable that many people are upset about the Not Guilty verdict for Casey Anthony but folks there were twelve jurors who made that decision. A decision made based on what they heard in court and NOT what Nancy Grace, a biased talk show host, had to say as she continuously used every tidbit of evidence both real, imagined, suspected and even concocted to convict Casey. When Nancy's case blew up in her face she threw a fit. It would be interesting to know how many real cases she had , how many she lost and if her reaction to those losses were similar to the tantrum she threw on the air when the "NOT GUILTY" verdict was read.
We may never know the real story but I assure you the verdict was not the JURORS fault, they voted based on the evidence the prosecutor presented, who had to do what the Grand jury ordered. They did not have sufficient evidence to convict Casey and I am sure being the professionals they are, they had to know their evidence was weak at best. That is probably why it took so long to to get the case to trial. I do not know what actually happened but the defense's opening statement about the drowning took everyone by surprise. In all probability if we knew the truth it would take us by surprise as well.

Nancy Grace is a sick venal monster. She's already murdered one guest, and I guess her bloodlust is in control of her completely now. Her fiancee probably killed himself to get away from her. Has anyone checked her brats for 666 on their foreheads? Because only Satan could bring himself to sleep with that monster.

He'll leave Nancy Grace alone when she leaves all those people unfortunate enough to be accused of crimes alone. She brings these reactions on herself by attacking people who haven't even had their day in court yet.

The media pundits and the networks "legal experts" keep getting more and more dangerous to the overall system of justice. The aftermath of the verdict in this case just proves it is all about money and ratings to these people. Nancy Grace is far from the only one to explode with righteous indignation last night. All of the talking heads on Fox news kept trying to outshout each other as to why the verdict didn't bring justice for the dead baby. Bill O'Reilly was actually the "Pinhead" title he likes to put on everyone who doesn't agree with him. "Whereis justice for Caylee?" they keep asking. Maybe it is Caylee, sitting on a little pink cloud, thanking the Lord her mother will not be mistakenly put to death by a legal system run amuck. GOD bless this jury! And this type of coverage must stop. Time to leave the Anthony family alone, and move on.

I agree with your comments and add that I think the Nancy Grace program and others like it should be permanently banned from all media outlets and any program like Nancy Grace's who tries to influence the decision of a jury or a court in general should be given the same punishment they advocate.
