HGTV 'Design Star' Premiere: Who's Your Favorite Designer?

by Jean Bentley, posted Jul 11th 2011 10:00PM
HGTV Design StarOn Monday's premiere of the sixth season of HGTV's 'Design Star,' the first challenge saw the designers pair up to decorate rooms in a ginormous New York apartment. It yielded some excellent results -- and more than a few disasters.

Most importantly, we got to know the 12 finalists, who range from a Type-A former newscaster to a criminologist.

After the jump, read my first impressions of the contestants and share your own in the comments.

My favorite pair was Kellie and Karl -- they worked well together and their design was gorgeous. Karl was a little dull in front of the cameras, so hopefully he'll be able to show off a little more personality as the season continues. (Conspiracy theory started by me: Could he be the unexpected winner Candice Olson told AOL TV about? Yeah, yeah, he won the first challenge, but he seems like an unassuming dude who won't pose too much of a threat to his competitors.)

Kevin. That orange wall. Seriously?

Cathy's formidable, but her ultra-confident attitude could put off her competitors (and viewers). Also she occasionally has crazy eyes.

I can't trust Doug; he wears sunglasses indoors.

I like Blanche because she's cute and young with an old-lady name, and I relate to that. Wish she had stayed!

Aside from the empty bookshelves in their room, Meg and Tyler showed plenty of potential (and non-annoying personality traits), too.

Your turn. What did you like/dislike about last night's episode?

Meg is doing a marvelous job...........she comes across as wholesome and enjoying her designing........and super with the audience........................She would make a great departure from a chick or cutsey winner...........she has a down home flavor missing for awhile from previous contestants and winners..........being from the midwest doesn't hurt her either.............let her be herself. There will always be a chance to "glamorize" down the road. (if the network deems necessary)............for now, she fits well into the "do it with design and honesty"...............
