'Damages' Season 4: John Goodman & Chris Messina Talk Life on Set

John Goodman, Chris MessinaAny fan of 'Damages' knows the show is propelled to riveting dramatic heights thanks to the relationship between Patty Hewes (Glenn Close) and Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne), but behind every great woman, there's a few good men. 'Damages' Season 4 is no exception.

John Goodman, Chris Messina and Dylan Baker join Close and Byrne for a new kind of case -- this season (premieres Wed., July 13 at 10PM on DirecTV's Audience Network), the ladies are exploring the military and private defense sector.

Goodman plays Howard Erickson, the CEO of a private military defense company, the target of Ellen and Patty's case. Messina plays a decorated solider and contractor under Erickson and Baker plays Jerry Boorman, an associate of Erickson's who is described by DirecTV as a "shadowy opportunist."

When the season kicks off, Messina's character, Chris Sanchez -- who is suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder -- meets up with Ellen, who's an old high school friend. In order to get into the character, Messina went to some extreme lengths. Besides research, he said he would stay up for days.

"I was exhausted while shooting, and I would drink Red Bulls to get shaky," he told AOL TV. "I was a complete mess. Either that's going to work or it's going to be terrible -- I'm not sure -- but that's what I did."

Messina's character gets caught in the middle of the struggle between Patty, Ellen and Goodman's Howard Erickson.

Glenn Close, Damages"He has absolutely no sense of humor, but he just knows what he's doing is right," Goodman said about his character. "It's the right thing and he never does anything wrong."

The two may find themselves at odds during the course of the season, but both Messina and Goodman had nothing but great things to say about joining 'Damages.' Goodman said the show's reputation for good scripts drew him to the series.

"The way they tell a story ... I like the way they tell a story. They cast a lot of really good actors, a lot of good people to play with," he said. "I did [a scene with Glenn Close] and Rose and we just laughed our a**es off. It was just great -- we had a good time."

But Messina said working with Emmy-winner Close was nerve-racking.

"These actors are incredible, you know? And I've been in this situation before. I've been lucky enough -- and it sounds corny -- to pinch yourself and say, 'How the hell did I get this scene with Glenn Close? When are they going to find out this was a mistake?' I asked them for a scene with her all season long and I finally got a scene with her and I crumbled with nerves," he said. "It was like I had never acted before, I was so intimidated by her. But they've been lovely."
