'Rescue Me': Black Shawn Asks For Tommy's Blessing to Marry His Daughter (VIDEO)

'Rescue Me' S07/E02Tommy tried to reassert his authority in the household on this week's 'Rescue Me' (Wed., 10PM ET on FX), but we're talking about a house in which he is outnumbered four to one now that Sheila is basically there all the time.

Add to that the fact that the women have synchronized their cycles, it was no wonder that Tommy found himself in the feminine hygiene aisle. But this chain of events led to him running into Kelly (Maura Tierney), who chose to bring her real life struggle with breast cancer onto the show.

That encounter turned out to be perhaps the only bright spot for Tommy in the episode, as he also had his authority, such as it is, challenged by Black Shawn. After freaking out and getting drunk after Bart asked her to marry him last week, Colleen returned the favor by asking him to marry her.

So Bart decided to do the honorable thing and ask for Tommy's blessing on their union, though it turns out he really didn't care what Tommy thought. Or maybe he was giving Tommy a chance to step up and treat him with a little respect. Instead, Tommy opted for some childish poking and told him, "No."

So Bart called Colleen then and there and told her "Yes," while Tommy's jaw dropped. "I respect you. Now it's time for you to respect me," Bart said. "Okay, Dad?"

So far things are remaining relatively light in this new season, despite last week's incident at the bar with Tommmy shooting it up after Colleen got drunk. In fact, this episode was almost entirely broad strokes of humor, aside from Bart standing up for himself, the return of Kelly and the talk about the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

We loved the boys of Ladder 62 stepping up to support Lou by alternately taking the various parts of his physical for him. Particular highlights included Sean's out of control bladder and Mike completely botching Lou's psych evaluation. But, as Black Shawn said, they're all family now.

As for that anniversary, it looks like this video project may be the unifying aspect of the season. It will certainly prove to be Tommy's biggest challenge as his refusal to deal with the emotions he feels around that day and the loss of his cousin have been the driving force of his self-destructive path throughout the series.

Maybe the successful completion of the video will help Tommy get on the road to healing, along with the rest of the cast, and actually give us some hope for a better tomorrow for these characters after we leave them.
