Ricky Gervais Will Play God in 'Afterlife'

by Chris Harnick, posted Jul 22nd 2011 10:15AM
Ricky GervaisRicky Gervais is God. Well, in his new pilot 'Afterlife,' he's playing God.

Gervais is teaming with former 'Dexter' showrunner Clyde Phillips for 'Afterlife,'
a new comedy about an atheist who dies and goes to heaven. There, he'll meet God, played by Gervais.

Here's how Gervais -- with his typical sense of humor -- described his celestial character in a blog post on his website: "But he's a slightly different God to the one you may have seen in 'Bruce Almighty' and other Hollywood films. He's an arrogant, wisecracking son of a bitch, who thinks he's the best thing since sliced bread. (So another stretch for me as an actor then.)"

Just because the main character is an atheist, don't expect God to smite him.

"He also loves welcoming atheists to heaven with a smug grin on his face," Gervais wrote. "He likes atheists deep down though. Or rather he likes good atheists. He admires the fact that they were moral people even though they didn't believe they would ever be rewarded with everlasting life."

This sounds a lot like the R.D.Coste book "A Night at the Gates". That's also about an atheist who goes to heaven. Pretty funny too. Could that guy and Gervais be one in the same?

A couple points:
1) Ricky Gervais isn't trying to depict the Christian God with this show. As such, he's not trying to mock the Christian God.
2) The word "Allah" is the arabic word for "God".

If Ricky's use of the word "God" in this comedy is somehow an attempt to mock the Christian God (even when he isn't trying to portray the Christian God), then aren't Muslims somehow "mocking" the Christian God when they talk about Allah (since Allah and God are the same word in different languages)?
The word "God" has a variety of meanings for a variety of people. Just because someone uses the word "God" doesn't mean that they are automatically referring to the Judeo-Christian god.

Also, to those of you who think I would rise up, complain, and sue if there was a show actually portraying the Muslim God (Allah) in a less-than-reverent sense; Newsflash: I wouldn't. Just because something offends me doesn't mean I try to censor it (especially if I haven't even given the show a chance). If I don't like a show, I don't watch it. Simple as that.

What's even funnier is that Ricky and all these other "funny people" who take the liberty in mocking God won't be the last ones to laugh. Or haven't you heard that is said, "...for God won't be mocked." Yes, it is all comedy and basically "innocent fun" geared against Christianity...I would like to see the same done towards Islam. Now there's a big BIG challenge for any of you funny guys. Go ahead and try!

Yes satan is a myth, thays the belief of atheists. there is no god or satan, which one can only hope the ridiculous simple-minded people who havent grown up out of fairy tales yet called christians will eventually see that as well. it would take them a lot further. might as well just sit around on christmas eve and wait for santa claus to show up with presents too.
