AMC Announces 'Hell on Wheels,' New Digital Studios

AMCAMC is going back to the wild west with 'Hell on Wheels.' The network announced the official premiere of the new series about the post-Civil War era construction of railroads.

"Since 'Broken Trail,' AMC has looked for the next expression of an original Western series," Joel Stillerman, senior vice president of original programming, production and digital content at AMC, said in a statement. "'Hell on Wheels' is an incredibly powerful story that captures the intensity and inspiration of the American West at a time when nothing less than the future of the nation was at stake. The characters and the story that Joe and Tony Gayton, Jeremy Gold, and John Shiban have created; and that our terrific cast and crew have realized is compelling, epic, and a truly original take on a classic American genre of storytelling."

The series tells the tale of Confederate soldier Cullen Bohannon, played by Anson Mount, and his journey for revenge after the wartime death of his wife. Look for the series to also examine the hardships of immigrants and African-Americans and delve into the rich history of the railroad.

Rapper/actor Common also stars as Elam Ferguson, an emancipated slave trying to enjoy freedom in a world filled with prejudice, Dominique McElligott as Lily Bell, Colm Meaney as Thomas "Doc" Durant, Ben Esler as Sean McGinnes and Philip Burke as Mickey McGinnes, and Eddie Spears as Joseph Black Moon.

'Hell on Wheels' premieres Sun., Nov. 6 at 10PM.

The network also announced AMC Digital Studios, a new online destination to develop web series to be homed on amctv.com The first web project is 'The Trivial Pursuits of Arthur Banks,' Co-written and directed by Peter Glanz, the project stars Adam Goldberg and Jeffrey Tambor. The new series is a co-release between Hulu and debuts Aug. 22.

"AMC Digital Studio provides an opportunity to extend our brand to the web, and to nurture great young writers and directors in a unique way," Stillerman said. "For our first web series we are very excited to have found an incredible piece of material from Peter Glanz who is truly an original filmmaker with a very unique voice. 'Trivial Pursuits' is a great piece of storytelling in a format that is incredibly well suited for the web and on brand for AMC."

'The Trivial Pursuits of Arthur Banks' follows Arthur Banks (Goldberg), a theater director who puts on an elaborate play that mirrors his dysfunctional love life. Tambor plays the main character's therapist.
