'Chelsea Lately' Panel Takes Jabs at Judge Judy's High Salary (VIDEO)
Chelsea Handler used a New York Times article about Judge Judy Sheindlin's astronomical salary as a jumping off point for some laughs on 'Chelsea Lately' (weeknights, 11PM ET on E!). According to the report, Judge Judy makes $45 million a year, a bafflingly gigantic figure to Handler and her roundtable of comedians Bobby Lee, Arden Myrin, and Chris Franjola.Handler observed that Sheindlin's salary, "is more than Jay Leno and David Letterman make combined, which is hard to believe. But she only works five days a month, so she makes 865,000 dollars a day."
Myrin imagined Sheindlin was a tough negotiator, spouting wisdom and intimidating the negotiators. "They fear her as if she's handing out death sentences or prison sentences," said Franjola about Sheindlin's litigants, "but she's only, like, telling people, 'You're gonna paint that man's garage.'"
Myrin also imagined Sheindlin bragging to Oprah Winfrey about how much money she makes, and if you go back to that New York Times article that Handler cited, the interviewer mentions that 'Judge Judy' sometimes beat Winfrey's show in the ratings during Winfrey's march to cable. So maybe she actually earned the money.
