Ryan Murphy Blames Media for 'Glee' Cast Drama, Puts Spin-Off on Hold

by Chris Harnick, posted Jul 29th 2011 11:10AM
Ryan Murphy is doing quite a bit of backpedaling following conflicting interviews given by himself and co-executive producer Brad Falchuk about the fate of a few graduating 'Glee' characters.

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Murphy said the characters played by Chris Colfer, Lea Michele and Cory Monteith will be graduating from McKinley High School in 2012. While it's been no secret that some 'Glee' characters would graduate next year -- reports date back to December 2010 -- some of the actors claimed ignorance to the news. Colfer said he found out via Twitter, causing a media frenzy.

'Glee' co-creator Brad Falchuk appeared at Comic-Con and tried to put out the fire by claiming the characters are graduating, but they're not necessarily leaving the series.

"It was never our plan or our intention to let them go. ... They are not done with the show after this season," Falchuk said.

Now, Murphy is speaking out about the controversy, saying he was working on a spin-off for the three actors that he wasn't allowed to announce and they were will aware of his plans. However, according to Murphy, the media blew things out of proportion.

"In March, Brad Falchuk and I started talking to [Colfer, Michele and Monteith] about it because you can't make people do spin-offs," Murphy told Deadline about the proposed plans. "So, we went to them and asked, 'What do you think about this? Are you interested? If you are interested, what would you want your character to do? Where do you think we should shoot it?'"

According to Murphy, all three actors expressed interest in a spin-off and taking their characters out of high school. "They were involved in the process for 3 to 4 months to the point where we were even talking about cities and relocations and we called Julliard and what would that mean and how would we do it. So, for any of those actors to say, 'I found out that I was fired off the show from Twitter,' is absolutely 100 percent not true. None of them were fired. It was never about that. We were going to do a spin-off where the three of them were going to go on. They all knew what was happening, they all had approved it, they all said they wanted to do it."

Now, plans for the spin-off are on hold. The idea was to take the characters to New York, as explored in the Season 2 finale, but the idea is taking a backseat to for the creators to work on Season 3 and their new FX show 'American Horror Story.'

"You know, I had dinner with Lea last night where we talked about it," he said. "We don't know what we're going to do. We were going to start talking about it in September and now we're not. We're going to talk about it in April."

As of now, plans for a spin-off show are not exactly moving forward, but they're not exactly dead. And what can we take away from this? "I've learned a lesson from this experience," Murphy said. "I've learned to really really monitor what I say. Before I didn't do that. My bad. Stupid."

They should definitely do a spin off! It'd would be great! We have not just fallen in love with the show and how it glorifies everyone being who they are no matter what that looks like but also with specific characters... so this should definitely happen!

Being a Gleek, I would love to see a Glee spin-off! Also, I'm not sure if I'm ready to NOT see Chris, Lea, and Cory every Tuesday night. Also, this makes me wonder, if a spin-off happens will Darren Criss be in the spin-off? I know he just joined the cast and I would like to see where Blaine goes as well.
