What to Watch: TV Picks for August 1-7

by Laura Prudom, posted Jul 31st 2011 12:30PM
Chris Harrison and JPMONDAY, AUGUST 1

'The Bachelorette' (8PM ET, ABC)
Ashley's journey comes to an end in Fiji, but will her happy ending come courtesy of Ben or JP? It won't be smooth sailing to get to the final rose, either -- one guy has her family's blessing, and the other is declared a mismatch by Ashley's sister, oops!

'Moby Dick' (8PM ET, Encore) miniseries premiere
This lavish literary adaptation sees William Hurt and Ethan Hawke in pursuit of the great white whale in a three hour miniseries that will air across two consecutive nights. Donald Sutherland and Gillian Anderson also star.

'Rogue Sharks' (9PM ET, Discovery) special presentation
Discovery's 'Shark Week' continues with this investigation into whether sharks can ever truly "go rogue" and develop a taste for human flesh as depicted in 'Jaws'. The one-hour special will weave stories of some of the most horrific shark attacks in history with a larger scientific detective story into the psychology of the intimidating creatures.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 2

'Proving Ground' (8PM ET, G4)

This week, the team tries to replicate a Quidditch game from the 'Harry Potter' films -- should be good for a giggle or two.

'Take The Money and Run' (9PM ET, ABC) series premiere
An interesting new reality concept from the producers of 'The Amazing Race' and the 'CSI' franchise, this new show gives two players an hour to hide a briefcase containing $100,000 before they're taken into the custody of police detectives for interrogation. If the cops can find the stashed cash within 24 hours, using professional interrogators and field work, they get to keep the money, otherwise, the players walk away with the briefcase.

Awkward 'White Collar' (9PM ET, USA)
Eliza Dushku guest stars as a sultry Egyptologist who assists Neal in tracking down Matthew Keller, who is stealing Egyptian artifacts.

'Awkward' (11PM ET, MTV)
This sharp and sassy teen comedy only gets better as it goes -- if you're not watching it yet, you should be. Dreamy Matt invites social pariah Jenna to a party, prompting her to wonder if he's ready to take their relationship public. In the meantime, she begins to realize that she might have more in common with Jake; for an outcast, she's definitely doing well on the boy front, huh?

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 3

'So You Think You Can Dance' (8PM ET, Fox)

The top six dancers perform, and we remain dazzled by Cat Deeley.

'Franklin & Bash' (9PM ET, TNT) season finale
'Battlestar Galactica' alum Tricia Helfer guest stars in the first season finale as a hotshot attorney in a major murder trial, while Danny Trejo appears as a wrestler fighting for justice. The show was recently renewed for a second season, so the dynamic legal duo of Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Breckin Meyer will be back next year.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 4

Jersey Shore'Jersey Shore' (10PM ET, MTV)
season premiere
It pains me to type this, since I think most of the world's problems can probably be traced back to Snooki, but it's my duty to inform you that the fourth season premieres tonight, and sees the little orange monster and her pals terrorizing Italy and failing to make pizza, or something. If you like trainwreck TV, nothing looks trainwreck-ier.

'Wilfred' (10PM ET, FX)
Alternatively, you can watch the wildly offensive and subversively hilarious 'Wilfred,' which features the filthy hound pursuing a new love interest, while Ryan meets a new lady friend of his own.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 5

'Friends With Benefits' (8PM ET, NBC)
series premiere
Don't get too attached to this summer burn-off show -- it's been shuffled on NBC's schedule more times than a hockey puck -- but for curious folks in need of some frothy romantic comedy, check out this sitcom from 'Arrested Development' executive producer Brian Grazer, starring Ryan Hansen and Danneel Harris. Unrelated to the recent movie of the same name, but sharing a vaguely similar plotline, a couple of friends decide on a mutually beneficial arrangement while waiting for Mr. and Mrs. Right, while their disapproving friends try to figure out their own love lives.

'ThunderCats' (8.30PM ET, Cartoon Network) timeslot premiere
The rebooted Cats settle into their regular timeslot tonight and traverse the Sea of Sand, where they find themselves attacked by pirates.

'Torchwood: Miracle Day' (9PM ET, Starz)
As the season reaches its middle, mortality makes a return in a particularly unnerving way, while the team grows closer to uncovering the truth behind the miracle.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 6

'Outcasts' (9PM ET, BBC America)
season finale
A deadly virus sweeps through Forthaven in the season finale of this British sci-fi drama, as Berger attempts to undermine Tate's government.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 7

'Curiosity' (8PM ET, Discovery) series premiere
A new series investigating some of life's biggest questions -- episode one tackles perhaps the biggest of all: 'Did God Create the Universe?' Discovery explores the subject from both religious and scientific standpoints.

'Teen Choice 2011' (8PM ET, Fox) special presentation
The Teen Choice Awards return, hosted by 'The Big Bang Theory' star Kaley Cuoco. OneRepublic and Selena Gomez and The Scene are slated to perform, with stars from 'The Vampire Diaries,' 'Glee' and 'Twilight' leading the nominations.

'Falling Skies' (9PM ET, TNT) season finale
The first season wraps up with a two-hour finale, in which the resistance fighters launch a bold attack on the aliens, while Tom experiences a close encounter after being left behind to guard the civilians in the camp.

Out of all of those, I only watch Falling Skies. And even that I could take it or leave it. Besides baseball (lets go Yankees!!! and marlins too), right now for the summer, my schedule is:

Monday -
Alphas: so far I've recorded it and watched it later in the week, but I like it a lot and might catch it on it's premiere night (after baseball) from now on.
Pawn Stars and American Pickers: if there's an off night for my teams in baseball or the games are a blowout or something I'll normally tune into these 2 shows.

Tuesday -
Covert Affairs: yes the show sucks but I like Piper (prob cause she's nice to look at) and that's the main reason I watch it. I normally DVR it and watch it later in the week when nothing's on. Besides that, it's a baseball night for me.

Wednesday -
Big Brother: only reality show I watch. Mostly for the contests (even though they're fixed) and dynamic of being locked up in the house all summer long.
Locked up Abroad: Don't care for the drug smuggling episodes, but I love the kidnapped ones.
The Franchise: Not quite Hard Knocks but still pretty good, even if it is the SF Giants.

Thursday -
Big Brother: see above.

Friday -
Whale Wars: pretty good documentary.

Saturday -
Movie night.

Sunday -
Big Brother: see above.
Falling Skies: see above.
Ice Road Truckers: didn't like it at first but started watching the India season (which was amazing they drove on those roads/in those trucks) and have liked it so far this season. Decent documentary.
