Here's a comforting discovery that might help you get through Shark Week: sharks may not enjoy the taste of people. According to 'Rogue Sharks' (Tuesday, 9PM on Discovery), even on the rare occasion that sharks bite humans, in most cases, they don't make a meal of it.The report examined a series of shark attacks on Northern California's Salmon Creek Beach in 2005, recreating an attack on surfer Megan Halavais. Halavais had been surfing when a Great White attacked, dragging her under by the leash on her surf board. She was bitten on the leg, but both she and shark experts found the nature of wound puzzling. "My scars are so clean, it's literally like it bit me and then lifted its teeth back out so gently."
One of the experts who studied shark bites on the California coast said that in 75 percent of cases, sharks bit a single time and then moved on. "The only reason we can determine is that they do not prefer humans as their prey species," he said. So if you're planning on swimming off the coast of California, no worries. If a shark attacks, it'll probably be just the one bite.
