Dane Cook Says He Never Stole Jokes From Louis C.K. on 'Louie' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Aug 5th 2011 6:56AM
Dane Cook, 'Louie'Say what you will about the controversy, but it was pretty bold of Dane Cook and Louis C.K. to address it directly and to each other within the context of 'Louie' (Thu., 10:30PM ET on FX). The meeting was necessitated by Louis' desire to score Lady Gaga tickets, and Cook being with the same agency as her.

C.K. goes to ask for this favor, so he can maybe make his daughter happy for her birthday, and Cook confronts the controversy directly.

"Everything I read about me was about how I stole jokes from you, which I didn't," Cook said.

"I kind of think you did," C.K. responded. When Cook asked why he would risk his reputation to do that, C.K. said, "Because they were funny jokes."

Cook lamented how he's seen in the comedy world, as a sellout, while C.K. is a comic's comic and still respected and seen has having his integrity. It was a surprisingly candid and "real" moment in the show. Though it didn't really solve the controversy, it showed that both men are willing to stand above it and move on.

Cook should steal some jokes. He's the unfunniest man in the world.

it happens all the time.... Lucian Scott played Mr Vickers on the old Bob Newhart show. His hair, age mannerisms, facial expressions and attitude are all included in Jeff Denham’s “Walter” character. As much as I like Jeff Denham’s body of work, Walter is clearly stolen from Bob Newhart. Check it out:
The Bob Newhart Show: The Ceiling Hits Bob - 1975
The Bob Newhart Show: Fathers & Sons & Mothers – 1975
The Bob Newhart Show: The Battle of the Groups - 1974

Stealing someone's material sounds like plagerism. Can you do it if you cite the source? Imagine doing comedy with footnotes.

Milton Berle made a living from 'stolen material.! What a non-story. People have been telling jokes for thousands of years, odds are good that many are re-told!

I used to like Dane Cook before he got so full of himself and his jokes got unfunny. He's turned into a rock star who is unable to rock.
