'Desperate Housewives' to End After Season 8
You'll have to look elsewhere for your soapy domestic drama come May 2012, because that's when 'Desperate Housewives' will conclude its eighth and final season. Although ABC hasn't yet sent official word, the network is expected to announce the big news at Sunday's Television Critics Association panel. UPDATE 8/7/11: ABC has since made it official.According to Deadline Hollywood, the news was completely unexpected considering all four of the show's big stars -- Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross, and Eva Longoria -- had signed on for two more years, and creator Marc Cherry had publicly stated he wanted the series to run for nine seasons.
The women of Wisteria Lane hit the airwaves in October of 2004 and quickly became a ratings hit, averaging an audience of more than 23 million viewers in its first season. Though the series has slipped over the years, it averaged almost 12 million viewers during season 7 and has been the most-watched comedy internationally since 2006, with 51.6 million people tuning in worldwide.
Creator Cherry won't be on board as an executive producer/showrunner this fall, though Deadline reports that he's sticking around as a consultant while he develops other shows for ABC.
