'Jersey Shore' Italy Nabs Highest Premiere Ratings Yet

by Jean Bentley, posted Aug 5th 2011 5:30PM
Jersey ShoreAmerica's fist-pumping arm is officially back in action: MTV announced today that the fourth season premiere of 'Jersey Shore' -- a.k.a. "a bunch of self-professed guidos take a free trip to Italy" -- scored a total of 8.8 million viewers for its highest-rated season premiere ever.

Snooki, J-Woww, The Situation and the rest of the Macaroni Rascals drew a fraction fewer viewers than the series' top-rated episode (the Jan. 20, 2011 installment) with 8.9 million, but it was close.

The audience of 8.8 million was 4 percent bigger than the one that tuned in for last season's premiere, and the third-most-watched MTV telecast of all time. The top two? Why, other episodes of 'Jersey Shore,' of course.

The episode saw the cast members travel to Florence, Italy, where they'll GTL, smush, and presumably burn through buckets of hair gel before heading back stateside for season 6, which will take place at the familiar Seaside Heights house.

I really question the accuracy of 8.8 million watching it. Sounds like some PR going on. The truth is this group is rather old news and no one really cares anymore.

Using Guido's to describe the Jersey Shore kids is a racist remark agains Italian Americans.
It's the Media that make stars out of people like them. The next hit show will be The
Casey Anthony show! The Media makes millionares out of low lives and criminals.
Stop blaming the oldger generation, it's the generation of today who spoil their children.
I see it everyday. In a dept store I heard a young girl age about ten years old tell a cashier
to F____Off while her mother stood and laughed. Thank God for the older generation,
because if it wasn't for them you would be speaking German or Japenese.

If by "older generation" you mean anyone over 30, then I'm in that generation. I get why people watch shows like The Jersey Shore...at the heart of human nature is the desire to watch a train wreck. We all rubber-neck accidents, when someone famous dies, we want every tiny bit of information, when marriages implode we want all of the sordid, juicy details...we're voyeurs. The only difference in our behavior now, compared to our parents and grand-parents is decorum and the tools that we have which has made everything so easily accessible...24 hour news cycles, the Internet, texting, Facebook, Twitter, cell phone cameras....you name it we have access to it immediately. We're not only voyeuristic, we're also ravenous for immediacy. So when you have a group of publicity junkies like the Jersey Shore crew, they become addictive...like little hits of nose candy....chocolate....booze....shopping....shoes, people just get hooked and can't wait for their next misstep so that it can become a topic of mocking, sniping and amusement.
