As 'Wilfred' Spins its Wheels, Wilfred Makes Ryan Hit Jane Kaczmarek's Car (VIDEO)

'Wilfred' - 'Pride''Wilfred' (Thu., 11PM ET on FX) is starting to fall into a familiar pattern, and it's not necessarily a great thing. The show has a great premise, but it's time for them to stop spinning their wheels and start doing something with the long-term narrative.

We get that Ryan is the ultimate slacker and that Wilfred is trying to kickstart him into gear doing something, but we're just not getting anywhere.

This week's attempt had a fun guest star in Jane Kaczmarek, but at the same time I was thinking 'Wilfred' is too new to need to start bringing in guest stars to save it. We're not talking late run 'Will & Grace' here.

Ryan is in love with Wilfred's owner, and yet nothing's been done on that front except a tease in one episode. In fact, the episodes in general seem disjointed, as if there really is no larger story. Just Wilfred gets Ryan in trouble, Ryan weasels out of it, reset to page one.

In this episode, Wilfred had Ryan ding Kaczmarek's car to try and earn some money by suing her. What followed was a sordid tale of sexual conquests for both Ryan and Wilfred that's better off not talked about, and in many environments couldn't be discussed anyway. Kaczmarek, though, was an absolute hoot as a controlling, but ultimately very lonely and a little crazy, woman.

What I'm ready for is Ryan to start making moves in his life, good or bad, and see how Wilfred responds to those. I'd love to see him get a job, or make a more dramatic move. I know Wilfred represents the side of him that wants to make those bold moves, only to be shut down by Ryan's practical and more cowardly side, but it's time we started to see things happen.

And a little growth and continuity in characters or storylines wouldn't hurt either. We don't need a meandering and complicated narrative, but what about Jenna and Kristen and Drew and all those other characters we've met along the way. It's time to start taking this story somewhere before people get bored with seeing the same things over and over again.
